I don't know what to make of these comments from the Dalai Lama.

I like your caution against sensationalist interpretations.
OTOH old men, even saintly old men, as a group, don't have a good track record being feminist allies. So it is also likely in my opinion that he was really speaking out of his arse.
Hi, on the Eastern v Western Philosophy thread the Dalai Lama pizza joke came up. This was on Australian TV long ago. Looking it up on Youtube I saw another follow up video, again long ago, and in this he was asked about a female successor. After agreeing that this could well be, he then actually says "as a joke" much the same as above, about needing to be attractive. He expands on the joke.
It doesn't seem like a joke to me because the journalist asked him to clarify his meaning three or four times during the interview.
Now you got me picturing Trump in ochre robes, without his hair... making remarks about the shape of Guan Yin's body...
Argh!
Suggesting the current turmoil could lead the best if us veering of our chosen path actually makes me hopeful.Whatever he may or may not have said or meant this time, after three years of Donald Trump and Brexit, nothing surprises me.
"A thing of beauty is a joy forever" Keats.Well there is something to be said for aesthetics.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....attractive is a judgement by the speaker...
Some things can't be unsaid.
