"the opportunities they have been afforded"I don't think anyone is entirely to blame for their shortcomings nor do I think that anyone achieves anything wholly through their own effort.
Life gives us choices. We do not get to pick the choices that life gives us. We also cannot fully control or predict the consequences of the choices we make. We are also subject to many external events throughout our lives that we have no control over and cannot be reasonably expected to foresee.
While I am a skeptic and therefore have no faith, I can appreciate the humility it takes for the faithful to admit that their success is partially due to the opportunities they have been afforded and the impotence of the random tragedies that have affected them.
Afforded by whom?
In some ways I agree with you, we do have very little control over what goes on around us and to us, however, when you 'get in the flow' of something, everything relative seems to fall into place, become easier, more abundant, and easily controlled. This is what Crowley meant by doing One's Will, this is what the Temple of Set refers to as Xeper (Egyptian: kpr), what the LHP refers to as the Black Flame.
