Some will have noticed a change of Avatar on my profile.
The image is a still from the Wim Wenders film Wings of Desire which is one of my all-time greats.
I had once decided that would I ever have a pin-up on my wall, one would be Judy Holliday and the other would be Bruno Ganz – the avatar is Bruno Ganz in the role of the angel Damiel from the movie ... the background (him standing atop the Berlin Victory Column) has been removed and replaced with a cloudy grey. This hints to my like of the "Seascapes" photographs of Hiroshi Sugimoto.
The tagline, 'so it goes' is from the Kurt Vonnegut novel Slaughterhouse Five – The Children's Crusade'
All in all this reflects my gloomy mood at the moment. I am saddening by populist media conducting the orchestra while we burn our future. I'm saddened by the extreme polarisation of debate (I blame social media), no middle ground, no concession, no debate, fake news ... actually, just two sides shouting at each other.
Most of all I'm horrified by a world in which to say 'Palestinian' is taken to mean 'I support the worst kind of terrorism' and the suggestion of 'socialism' or 'the left' is met with fear and derision as the world lurches further and further towards the less-than-attractive aspects of right-wing extremism.
So cut me some slack is I come across a bit bleak. That's the way it looks to me at the moment ... and I look at my grandchildren – seven, five, three and two, and find it hard to picture any positive outcomes for them.
