I didnt read the book but did watch the Discovery channel program
my take the whole mystry came from a " secret society" members list with Da Vinci's name on it. Ties into the holy grail and alot of other different things very mystical and relies on a persons ability to believe in things and stories that have no written record to support them. Facts dont seem to matter much why let them get in the way of a good story. Who really knows why Da Vinci painted the last supper the way he did I was told once he used inmates as models while preparing sketches for the final painting. I dont know I wasnt there
