Heterodoxy and "Heresy"

We all fall short of the Glory of God. Thankfully His Grace is sufficient.
In the meantime hopefully outright persecution can be minimized or eliminated (if only... i dream on)
The right to privately held beliefs and the right to write, speak, and gather with like minded people - even if every last bit of it disagrees with all mainline or majority or orthodox religion or whatever - those rights to freedom of conscience must be vigorously maintained.

Interesting that you use the word persecuted.

I wonder to what extent religions outside Western monotheistic religions conceive of "heresy" -- Does anybody know?
I think all religions conceive of 'heresy' as a departure from the Right Path. It's there in Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism ...

The right to be wrong is, of course, a cherished belief. I would not deny it to anyone.

Nor would I deny the right of a Way, the right of that which declares itself Orthodox, to defend itself in the face of critique and error.

Too often the human capacity for spite, for violence, for perceived offence, leads to violence, and escalated to institutional levels, violence of a scale unimaginable.

Religions have been guilty of this. Secular philosophies have been guilty of this.

In fact I'd say the tendency towards this is growing and increasing in the West, without getting into politics or ideologies.

Nevertheless, those offences should not invalidate a collegiate discussion regarding orthodoxy, heterodoxy and error.

I dont understand why you are so shocked and amazed by any of this. You are very well read and appear to have studied christianity at length.
I take ideas seriously and if they don't make sense to me I keep giving the ideas a chance to see if they can make sense.
For our purposes here those are theological ideas, and the Abrahamic threads are most active.

I think what I would benefit from, if I could get it, would be a series of graduate level courses on the topics of comparative religions and the topic of heresiology.

If you find the school that teaches that as a major, I will submit my posts from this site to request an honorary doctorate.

I have been told I am wrong so many times I am fully aware that is correct...but that doesn't mean any of them are right by any means.

This heretic has been guaranteed hell by many...but most of them don't follow their stated church and.christian doctrines.

As far as faithful servant goes...it is her steadfast faith I have grown to admire. We disagree on many a topic, but I would not lift a finger to change this woman if it endangered her belief.

What is scriptural? I don't speak the Christian creed, but for me, the Quan and the Bible are scripture.
I put in italics what is not scriptural according to the Bible in my opinion, and in bold what is explicitly denied in the Quran
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Nicene Creed 489 AD version by preference

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
You will not bother about the passages set in straight bold, but have a look at the italics passages and see whether this is biblical.

6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. third day he rose again from the dead.

Ephesians 4:9
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

1 Peter 4:6 says, "For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does

The word hell is not an accurate translation as it would be the place of the dead hades or sheol or Abrahams bosom. There are more verses if you want to research.

The church is the body of Christ. This is not a new teaching.

1 Corinthians 12:
This chapter provides the most detailed explanation of the church as the body of Christ, comparing the different parts of a human body to the various roles within the church.
Ephesians 1:22-23:
This passage also states that Christ is the head of the church, which is his body.

. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
