The Bahá'í Fast is a 19-day period of fasting that takes place every year in March. During this time, Bahá'ís between the ages of 15 and 70 abstain from food, drink, and tobacco from sunrise to sunset.

Fasting rules
  • Bahá'ís fast during the Bahá'í month of ʻAlaʼ, which begins at sunset on March 1 and ends at sunset on March 20
  • The fast is an individual obligation, but is not enforceable by Bahá'í administrative institutions
  • The fast's chief purpose is spiritual, to reinvigorate the soul and bring the person closer to God
Exemptions

    • Those under the age of fifteen or over age seventy
    • Women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating
    • Travelers
    • The ill
    • Those performing heavy physical labor
Tips for fasting

    • Eat fruits and mixed nuts as a snack before going to bed
    • Set aside time for prayer and meditation
    • Get in tune with nature
    • Consult a doctor if there is any doubt about whether fasting would be bad for your health
