The Panagrolaimus kolymaensis worm was discovered in 2002 in Siberian permafrost near the Kolyma River. Scientists revived it in 2018, and its discovery and classification as a new species were published in July 2023. Since its revival, it has reproduced asexually, with over 100 generations now studied in laboratories to understand its extreme survival mechanisms.
