Why do discussions about polygamy always centre around sex? It seems such a short sighted view. A man who marries a number of wives has to provide for them all and their offspring, deal with their jealous infighting, etc .. hardly the image of a constant orgy.

The idea that a man with multiple wives must provide for them is not universal to polygynists. Some of them really do treat it like an ongoing adolescent fantasy, and the women (and girls) are often coerced by means of living in an isolated "community". "Excess" young men are expelled.

Very true, there are some people who do marry multiple partners for silly reasons and do treat their spouses like slaves, as there are people who marry one partner thinking it will be sex on tap but we all know reality and fantasy are two very different things.

I have met one man who has had 9 wives .. every few years he divorces one to make room for a new one and it has little to do with sex and everything to do with perceived social standing, showing himself to be a big man ... if only he knew he is the laughing stock of the neighbourhood!!
