The Mind-Bending Truth About Trillions of Galaxies

Does anybody here follow Astronomy? (My husband used to get Astronomy magazine regularly)

5:44 minute video about how the Hubble telescope and more recent telescopes have revealed the evidence of the vastness of the universe and the incredible, untold number of galaxies that may be out there.

Last line of the video "Nature has surprised us beyond our wildest imagination"

The comment section, as always, has an array of takes on this, some in awe, some trying to make calculations, some making theological points, and some people who point out the importance of focusing on our own world.

What do you think?

It's so hard to grasp how huge and vast our universe is! But it saddens me to know that we have our limits of what we can see. The universe is expanding so fast that currently it is impossible for us to see the farthest stretches of the universe. So what we see with the Webb telescope is likely the farthest we'll ever see. But we'll be discovering so much in the future about our universe either way.

Amazing! Trillions of galaxies, each one holding trillions of stars, and so many stars holding planets.
We are being told that this universe will expand for all time, but it may expand and contract, a pulsing universe. Either way, I won't be around to find out which! :)

Closer to home and equally fascinating are the planets in our solar system. We have learned that Mars once had a magnetic field, atmosphere including oxygen and seas, a blue planet when our Earth was still a furnace.

The salt water found in a Saturn micro-moon, small planets orbiting far out in the Ort cloud and this solar system's influence as far out as a light year in all directions.

Yes, we are learning so much about the solar system and outer space but especially how tiny our world is and how special.

I don't subscribe to Astronomy magazine, but I've taken several classes in it (didn't do well due to being weak in my arithmatic skills, much to my friend, Dr. America's, chagrin...)

Back in 1984 a read a "Tablet of the Universe" by Abdul'baha.

I had my first glimpse of the unfathomable size of creation. The tablet quoted a more ancient view of creation and amazingly, prior to modern telescopic capabilities.

For me, it showed me that some minds can se beyond this material world, and some in the past had an understanding of the extent of creation.

Here is some extracts and I will make an observation following

"....Know thou that the expressions of the creative hand of God throughout His limitless worlds are themselves limitless. Limitations are a characteristic of the finite, and restriction is a quality of existent things, not of the reality of existence..."...Consider the following well-known tradition and examine its meanings indicative of the vastness of the cosmos and its awesome limitless expanse: 'God, exalted be He, fashioned one hundred thousand, thousand lamps and suspended the Throne, the earth, the heavens and whatsoever is between them, even Heaven and Hell -- all of these in a single lamp. And only God knows what is in the rest of the lamps.'...." Abdu'l-Baha

So Everything we discover is but contained within one lamp! And there is 100,000,000 more!

I always smile when more extent of space is discovered, as all we have found and can find, is but a pin head in Gods creation.

Hello Tony,
Yes there are billions of galaxies that can be seen, each one containing billions of stars.

Do you think that intelligent life exists all around?

Hello Tony,
Yes there are billions of galaxies that can be seen, each one containing billions of stars.

Do you think that intelligent life exists all around?
Yes indeed OB. Baha'u'llah has confirmed this.

"Know thou that every fixed star hath its own planets, and every planet its own creatures, whose number no man can compute". – Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, pp. 162-163.

In his commentary on this passage, Shoghi Effendi writes: "Regarding the passage on p. 163 of the 'Gleanings'; the creatures which Bahá'u'lláh states to be found in every planet cannot be considered to be necessarily similar or different from human beings on this earth. Bahá'u'lláh does not specifically state whether such creatures are like or unlike us. He simply refers to the fact that there are creatures in every planet. It remains for science to discover one day the exact nature of these creatures". - Shoghi Effendi, Lights of Guidance p. 478 (There is more written and more clarity given on this topic)

So no doubt a future united humanity will be able to traverse these worlds. Interestingly, it has been suggested that the means and science to indertake interstellar travel is not granted by God until humans mature enough.

So to briefly expand on this interesting subject, I have copied this from the "Baha'i Forum" where a poster named "Earth" replied to a thread on the topic of 'Peoples' on other planets.

".... Now for the really interesting bit. While 'Abdu'l-Bahá has encouraged mankind to travel to the stars, Shoghi Effendi revealed this has a precondition attached to it. Namely no species of human are permitted to gain access to the technology to interstellar and intergalactic travel until their home solar system has achieved a condition of profound unity. This is because no human species is permitted to pose a risk to other humans living in the cosmos. Put another way, we cannot travel to the stars until we have achieved the Most Great Peace on our homeward.......

......Now for something even more interesting. Enoch Oiling originally assumed this would mean all humans would naturally be able to understand and bond with each other. But this was not Shoghi Effendi's outlook. He explained to Enoch Olinga that we would be able to understand and relate to some species of humans, but some would remain totally alien to us. But the really important point to understand here, is because all species of human that have obtained such technology have been taught the Divine wisdom that they cannot employ malice against each other. It stands to reason that the older races of humans will naturally be far more advanced than the newer races of humans...."

That kind of shows you where we are at as a human race OB.

Great science requires a greater unity of mind.

I hope all is well with you and yours OB, health and happiness for you always.

Regards Tony

The big reason my husband didn't go into astronomy academically/professionally was the chemistry required
