Drugs and Drink

I'm wondering, Hinduism generally has a very relaxed attitude to sex (the illustarted guide to the Karma Sutra anyone ;)) but Indian society can be very uptight about it- actors aren't even allowed to kiss in movies,

How does this square?

Along similar lines, what are normal attitudes to drink and drugs? I wouldn't have thought they'd be prohibted entirely- but thats why I'm asking.

Any help anyone?

Sinistar-

You have to remember that India was colonized by Britain, so many of the laws and standards of morality are remnants of English folk undoubtedly trying to "civilize" the Hindus. Thankfully the Indian culture was not usurped or destroyed, but is nevertheless irrevocably influenced (for good or bad). In terms of drugs and drink, I can't remember whether there are any regulations or restrictions for Hindus. I do know that while marijuana is illegal for Indian citizens, it is legal for and provided to holy men, compliments of the Indian government.

Cheers,
T
