bananabrain .... this is really off topic but this is for you ....

After Reading THIS, you'll NEVER look at a banana in the same way again!

Bananas. Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose
combined with fibre, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial
boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough
energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number
one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way a
banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a
substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to
our daily diet.

DEPRESSION: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people
suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This
is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body
converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and
generally make you feel happier. PMS: Forget the pills -- eat a banana. The
vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your
mood.

ANEMIA: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of haemoglobin in
the blood and so helps in cases of anaemia.

BLOOD PRESSURE: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium
yet low in salt, making it the perfect way to beat blood pressure. So much
so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry
to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood
pressure and stroke.

BRAIN POWER: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped
through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and
lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the
potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

CONSTIPATION: High in fibre, including bananas in the diet can help restore
normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to
laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana
milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the
help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk
soothes and re-hydrates your system.

HEARTBURN: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you
suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief. MORNING
SICKNESS: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels
up and avoid morning sickness.

MOSQUITO BITES: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the
affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it
amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

NERVES: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria
found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and
crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese
were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to
avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels
by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels
steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders
because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that
can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes
over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit
that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant
mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure
their baby is born with a cool! temperature. Seasonal Affective Disorder
(SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood
enhancer tryptophan.

SMOKING: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12
they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the
body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

STRESS: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat,
sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we
are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium
levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana
snack.

STROKES: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine,"
eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by
strokes by as much as 40%!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it
to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three
times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other
vitamins and minerals It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best
value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so
that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

Moved to the Lounge, as it really has nothing to do with Judaism on the Judaism board. :)

Hi pohaikawahine,

Thats good to know. Perhaps now we can dispense with apples for the moment.

Thanks
Kelcie:)

LOL, Kelcie--we all know it was a pomegranite (sp?), anyway:) . (Oops--now we have to move it from the lounge:) --sorry Brian, couldn't help myself).

Also--I have never done this, but I hear that if you bury a banana peel beside a rose bush, it will flourish--just don't know what to do about the ant mounds it tends to incite--???

It works I have done it many times .... I have 14 rose bushes and they are covered with large healthy flowers .... about the ants, sometimes I put the peels in the microwave and heat them until they turn almost to ashes (have to watch that it doesn't catch fire) and then spread the ashes around the roses .... and Kelcie I thought you would really like that piece on bananas .... when I was small I didn't eat a lot of apples because they had to be imported, but there were plenty of bananas and we had something called 'star-apples' (you probably had them also) ....inlove .. do you know anything about breadfruits .... I told someone about breadfruit trees once and when he retold the story he said that in the Pacific they had "banana-bread" trees .... really funny ..... hmmmmm I wonder if breadfruit would work with roses!!!! lol, pohaikawahine

have you ever seen a natural banana? they don't look anything, at all, like the artificially created yellow bananas that we buy from the store.

much better than apples... which seem to have problems with the amount of pesticide that are found in the apples...

metta .... I'm very curious, what type of bananas did you see .... the one's I've seen are very yellow like the ones from the store .... we use to eat bananas right off the tree .... and if anyone has ever seen a banana flower, it is stunning and very beautiful .... it can be used in soups, salads, and in stir=fry dishes and is a good food for pregnant mothers .... requires careful preparation because you must remove all the sticky sap.

Oh m'gosh--yes, yes, yes--I don't know how I know about breadfruit, unless I was the only one paying attention in my third grade "geography" class--yes! I have mentioned breadfruit to people all my life, and they just don't seem to know what I am talking about. I have never tasted it as far as I know, but I have thought about it since third grade--LOL--I come from a poor school district--maybe we had at least one good textbook--wish I still had it--it had pictures.:)

And bananas? Are y'all talking about plaintains? Little greenish bananas that people tend to fry? I hope miclason sees this thread--I would lay money that she knows all about them. Of course, they may be different in the Pacific than in the Caribbean...

Anyway--hey--maybe when I get a few minutes of Heaven, I will find my recipe for fried plaintains--or if I have to work too much to post, maybe miclason has one?:)

breadfruit is very tasty and can be prepared in many many ways .... included steaming, frying, drying, baking, and even preserved to last up to two years (use to be used for long canoe voyages) ....the preserved breadfruit requires an aquired taste because it is fermented ....

here is banana-bread receipt that you will find fun ....

3 1/2 c sifted all purpose flour
3 t baking powder
1 t salt
1 t baking soda
2 c mashed, ripe bananas (eating bananas)
2 T lemon (or lime) juice
3/4 c shortening
1 1/2 c sugar
3 eggs
3/4 c milk (can use 1/2 evaporated milk + water to equal 3/4 c)

sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. mash bananas with fork... add citrus juice and mix .... (be sure to mash bananas well) cream shortening and sugar well, add eggs and beat thoroughly until light and fluffy. add sifted ingredients alternately with milk. fold in bananas... beat after each addition ....

steaming .... start water boiling in a large pot (usually over an open fire) with rocks or shells in the bottom .... grease 2 large clean tin cans.... pour batter into cans, no more than half full .... cover can top with foil or a leaf .... put in pot, nesting on rocks or shells .... cover pot .... steam one hour or until knife comes out dry ....

or you can pour into greased loaf pans ... bake in over 350 about 2 hour until a wooden pick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean ....

we call 'plaintains' cooking bananas, the the yellow ripe ones are eating balanas .... plaintains can be green or ripe and they are used differently .... there are curried bananas, fried bananas, banana casseroles, and bananas cooked with meat

sorry .... for the banana bread it can be baked in an over for one hour not 2 ....

great!

i've found bananas to give me a great energy boost, cheer me up after munching, etc. but all this new stuff i'm learning is even better.

now i gotta run out to the supermarket and get some!

what great pictures - thank you for sharing them - you even got a picture of a banana flower in there (the long stem and the large purple flower at the end) .... enjoyed seeing your family .... aloha nui, pohaikawahine

So, yes, we have some bananas...

Ummm--is that your family, Vaj?

I am really floundering here a bit--wish I had more time to read and post--not willing to give up my CR for lack of knowledge---:) (or time)

It seems I cannot log out before I make sure that there is something here that I do not know....:D

As Always--InPeace and InLove
