No religion?



After watching a TV show called ‘the root of all evil?’ I just wondered what you think of the idea of having no religion? The program claimed that religion causes much of the evil in the world today; the host blatantly condemned all religion as based upon ignorance.



Obviously it would be impossible to totally ban religion, yet it could be banned from schools, perhaps even places of public worship!



Just how far do they need to go though? I would say it doesn’t need changing – much!



More importantly, would it be ethical in its idea i.e. would the world be a better place without religion? You know science dogma is as bad as any other, and it is not true to say that they know there is no spirit or god! it is not a fact.



Btw CR was the first link on the website! Comparative religion from a Christian perspective – it said. Oh and I thought it was simply comparative in a general sense – silly me!

I just had to follow up on this, the promotion would be just too good. I'm afraid somebody has us confused...you see Z, there's a hyphen in the name of this site, and the one listed for the program you mentioned has no hyphen in their name. They are completely unaffiliated with this site. Two completely different critters. So no, we were not referenced by this program, in any way, shape or form.

Which, in my mind, is probably a good thing...

As to your OP, I think religion serves a purpose. I think that purpose is largely confused today, competing with a lot of other memes and philosophies. But I still see an innate need, a basic requirement at a fundamental (or foundational) level, in people. Even if some people vocally deny that need.

Professor Huston Smith referred to the world's religions as "the winnowed wisdom of the human race".

I am just wondering if 'wisdom' is ever the product of science? Knowledge, yes, but how can one empirically prove wisdom, or quantify it, determine its rational, scientific truth based on hard evidence, and if we can't then surely wisdom, along with religion, should be got rid of? And love too, whilst we're at it...

The claim that religion is the source of all evil has been thoroughly debunked by now - man is the source of all evil, and ever looks for some institution to blame it on.

The attrocities in the name of science, economics, socialism, of the last century leave the rest of history standing, and such names as Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, etc, would all agree that they and their motives were anything but religious.

It was the TV programs opinion! I don’t agree with it and it would be impossible to enforce anyhow. Atheism is a little too dogmatic for me!

I feel we are in an age of questioning and that people are seeking to understand via many different media, religion can but change in my personal opinion – I feel it can only grow as of consequence!

I agree, he needs to be open to the fact that we just don’t know everything! More importantly, that there are things that are simply unknowable because they are too subtle to be defined, or infinity that has no boundaries thus cannot be defined! Not everything is provable through experimented, but does that mean those things are not real – what if ‘faith’ is a similarly indefinable reality? ! I did agree with him concerning Catholics and birth control!

So true! It is in human nature where the blame must lie, lets face it people will fight over the most ridiculous of things! So as you say you could substitute religion for anything hierarchistic.



Having said all this – the role religion plays in the world’s troubles needs a little look at! As does the human condition! People are dualistic whatever the excuse – hopefully we’ll improve without having to learn the hard way [wars and terrorism etc.].
