1. To teach sheep a lesson.
2. To hid the truth from goats.

Namaste Silas, yes we are aware of why. I just find it interesting the discussion revolving around what doesn't exist is thinking and meant. Woa is me, but I always thought the parable was about G-d's (the fathers) forgiveness..and the notion that all that is...is for his children (including the wayward son)
 
I believe you're right in that the parable is about God's forgivess to His children.
