Oops sorry about that, I tend not to type sexual words but it was to try to make a point. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

Sorry to break into the naughty body parts discussion...but muslimwoman, I am very interested in your village and its seeming ability to produce leaders in society. Do you know about the ancient "nomes" of the Nile. The first "nome" was at Elephantine Island near the first cataract way upriver. There were about 19 or 20 if I remember correctly Do you know if your town is near one of these locations...the 18th perhaps ?

Also, my reference to your "hopes" was referring to your outlook on the benefits of societal interactions such as this between ordinary people like us. Just that and nothing more. Do you think such interactions worthwhile ?

Again...welcome..and salaam alyekum to you and yours.

flow....:)

Salaam aleykum flowperson

Sorry it took so long to reply, have been away for a few days.

As for the nomes I have no idea but will endeavour to find out and let you know.

I feel that societal interactions are paramount and yes such interactions are worthwhile. I cannot deny that I am often offended when I hear the ravings of some of the more 'radical' Islamic Imams and scholars. Burning books, banning music of any form, oppressing women, etc, but more interaction between 'ordinary' people of all faiths will, ensha'Allah (G-d willing), show the world that not all Muslims are terrorists or hold radical ideals. Can we, on an internet forum, change the face of our religion? Of course not but we can teach young people what being a 'good' person is all about and ensha'Allah, guide them away from the radical scholars of our various religions.

It is like the people that go to be literally crusified at Easter, does the world believe all Christians go to such extremes? No of course not because Christianity is a 'known entity'. The more interaction we have between nations, cultures, religions the more we will come to understand and accept each other. I think it is also important for young Muslim people to interact, I would not wish them to reject their faith but through interaction I would hope they will become more rounded Muslims with less radical ideas, who can be proud of their religion.

Salaam

Muslimwoman:

I think that you and I may have "utopian" ideas about all of this, which history has taught us all is "dangerous " thinking for the status quo to tolerate over time.

But yes...that is the reason humans communicate across differing and varied boundaries of distance, time, culture, religion... so that they might notice a self-similarity in each other no matter the conditions, and mutually benefit from that exchange and recognition.

As regards the nomes thing, don't go to any great troubleover it. It was a thought of mine from another thread we were discussing some months ago.
Thanks

Yes I confess, I have utopian ideas - but someone has to have them. :D Anyway I like to buck the system, it gives the little grey cells a workout.

Re the nomes of Egypt. My small town is in the 4th nome, the gods were Neith & Sobek.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you on that (I forgot oops  ).

As salaam aleykum Muslimwoman...

Thank you for your response on the nomes thingy. I've done a little research on this stuff and the first nome was at Elephantine Island at the first cataract of the Nile.

My understanding is that the numbers of the nomes got higher, up to about twenty, as the Nile winds its way to the Mediterranean Sea. You say that your town is about the fourth nome ? That would put it in lower Egypt would it not ? I need to do some more looking and I'll get back to you when I have more accurate information.

Yes, each nome had a dual set of Gods, and the oracle of Tehuti was at the first nome, which was also the gateway to Africa and the dwelling place of the Great Elephant or Yebu. It was also the location of a functioning Hebrew Temple about 600 bce. My understanding is that this system predates the earliest dynasties of the Egyptian Nation, and was also the first nationally systematic and organized of the early belief systems in the middle east. That means it's about 4,000-6,000 years old.

Thanks again...salaam

Hi Flow

Yes we are in Lower Egypt. Egypt is still classed as lower or upper but as I am sure you know it goes way, way back, hence the Pharonic crowns of upper & lower Egypt. The numbers are not sequential for upper & lower.

I go about once a month to Alexandria and they have one of the best libraries in the world. If there is anything you ever want to know just shout up and I shall ask at the library, the reference material there is mind blowing. Of course it may take some time to get you an answer but we can probably get info there that is not available on the net.

It has long been a question of mine, where did all the egyptian tehnology go? They were way ahead of the rest of the world and then in a flash became a virtually backward country, in 2007 they are still classed as 3rd world - so where did their engineering, mechanical, medical, etc knowledge go? Never knew about the Hebrew temple, will have to find out if it is still there. Hope to be visiting Aswan in the winter so will go hunting and let you know if I come across it.

Salaam

Dear Muslimwoman and flow,

Thank you for this dialogue. I haven't been talking, but I sure am reading! And perhaps living a bit vicariously through your experiences (hope no one minds:)). I noticed your location right away, MW, and I was so happy when flow did too, because I suspected that there would be an exchange of information like this to follow. I am tempted to jump in sometimes, but my offerings would only come out of what I have been able to muddle through and digest from various media sources and an occasional book. That wouldn't be nearly as cool, though, as these firsthand observations. So I decided to jump in and do what I know how to do. Once upon a time, I was one of those annoying people everyone loves to hate--a cheerleader. (I know, I apologize for many of the things done in the name of this institution, but it is part of my history. :D) So....sis boom bah (probably didn't spell that right, but after all, that is not what cheerleading is about, and my particular bunch never said that anyway) and "Yay!" How corny is that?

Fascinating. Thank you both!

InPeace,
InLove

Oh no a peeping tom  Hey jump in any time you want, the only way we learn is to exchange info.

Although I may have to hate you a little - sorry. Well really a cheerleader, that means you are fit, thin and pretty so my natural urge is jealousy :D Only joking. (Although my fingers are crossed your bum is spreading just a little now).

So what do you want to know or exchange about Egypt?

Know? Exchange? (InLove twirls a bit of loose hair around fingers and employs the time tested method of fluttering one's lashes in order to divert attention away from the fact that, indeed, there seems to be a hint of spreading. Note to self: must attempt to remember the basic physics of performing what I vaguely remember as something called a "cartwheel". Oh yeah, and smile...always smile.... :D <---but that smile is just kind of scary, IMO.)

What was the question?

Actually, I am sitting out on the sidelines here attempting to learn. I think I have been grounded because I can't speel very well. Just enjoying the game and trying to get my grades up. (waves banner) ;) :)

Damn I don't have that icon thingy that rolls around laughing - just try to imagine a middle aged woman trying not to pee her pants laughing - actually better not imagine it.

Okay lets do blonde talk... Do you (no stop looking at her), do YOU want (no not new shoes) to know (learn, gain knowledge - oh forget it) anything? :D

Salaam

MW,

I was looking around for a cartwheel, but like I said, I may be a little old for that now. However, I have discovered that I can still do this:

I'm in stitches ladies. :D

As to your question regarding lost Egyptian technologies, lots of that knowledge is thought to have gone up in smoke when the Romans burned the original Alexandria Library...twice ! Lots of documents regarding the origins of Christianity (including the original Book of Mark which is thought to have been three times as voluminous as that which ended up in the Bible Gospels) were also lost in the holocaust. My recollection is that this happened about 180 ad. A very sad event for the world of today. It's almost as if the Romans didn't want the world to know certain things...huh ?

Okay kill the Romans, burn their houses, steal their cattle and give them plague.

Unfortunately a huge amount was lost in Baghdad in 1258 when the Mongols took the city. They burnt millions of scrolls and unfortunately the Caliphate was based there and had collected together a huge piece of the Islamic knowledge to make a library.

Sorry I have to go and have a good cry now - wish I drank, then I could drown my sorrows. Can you drown your sorrows with lemonade?

Salaam

i know wil asked you this already, but i still don't understand why a christian would convert to muslim. in this case, what was it about islam that satisfied you more spiritually than "christian" teachings. the reason i ask is because i practice God's and His Christ's teachings 24/7. day and night i meditate on His Law and i seek His face continually in hopes that one day He will reveal Himself to me. but, if you could give me some scripture from the quran that you yourself love and follow day and night and base your life and relationship to God so that i can satisfy my curiousity about islam. that is mainly my reason for asking about islam is because i am so fascinated by its teachings and just want more info. i ask you because i have been reading your posts and i think you are such a cool person and can relate to alot of what you go thru in life, especially on the subject about marriage. thanks. hope to hear from you soon.

Leo...I respect your perspective, but I would call what you are posting here prostelytizing (sp?).

Muslimwoman...I sympathize with you. And don't forget what happened to the treasures of Iraq's culture when their museums and archaeological sites were trashed in 2003 while the "coalition" stood idly by and let it happen. I wept then when I realized a genocide was being perpetrated upon an entire culture beginning with the elimination of as much of its history as possible.
