Salaam to all :)

The Holy Quran is indeed a miraculous Book, for it has many scientific miracles in it in addition to other miracles:

Here is a list of some of the sceintific miracles of the Quran!:

In the Qur'an, which was revealed fourteen centuries ago at a time when the science of astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described in the following terms:

And it is We Who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We Who are steadily expanding it. (Qur'an, 51:47)

The word "heaven," as stated in the verse above, is used in various places in the Qur'an. It is referring to space and the wider universe. Here again, the word is used with this meaning, stating that the universe "expands." The Arabic word "moosiaaoona" in the term "inna lamoosiaaoona," translated into English as "it is We Who are steadily expanding it", comes from the verb "evsea," meaning "to expand." The prefix "la" emphasises the following name or title and adds a sense of "to a great extent." This expression therefore means "We expand the sky or the universe to a great extent." This is the very conclusion that science has reached today.

Until the dawn of the 20th century, the only view prevailing in the world of science was that "the universe has a constant nature and it has existed since infinite time." However, modern research, observations, and calculations carried out by means of modern technology have revealed that the universe in fact had a beginning and that it constantly "expands."

CREATION FROM HOT SMOKE

He placed firmly embedded mountains on it, towering over it, and blessed it and measured out its nourishment in it, laid out for those who seek it-all in four days. Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come willingly or unwillingly." They both said, "We come willingly." (Qur'an, 41:10-11)

The Arabic word for "smoke" in the above verse is "dukhanun," which describes the hot, cosmic smoke in question. This word in the Qur'an, in pinpoint fashion, describes this smoke very accurately for it is a warm body of gas containing mobile particles connected to solid substances. Here, the Qur'an has employed the most appropriate word from the Arabic language for describing the appearance of this phase of the universe. Let us note that only in the 20th century have scientists discovered that the universe emerged from a hot gas in the form of smoke.

THE EARTH'S GEOID SHAPE

After that He smoothed out the earth. (Qur'an, 79:30)

In the above verse, the word "daha" is used in the original Arabic. It, translated as "smoothed out," comes from the word "dahv," meaning "to spread." Although the word "dahv" also means to cover or to set out, the meaning of the verb is more than just a prosaic setting out, since it describes setting out in a circle.

The concept of roundness is also present in other words derived from "dahv." For example, the word "dahv" also refers to children dropping a ball into a hole in the ground, games involving throwing stones into holes and games played with walnuts. Words derived from that root are also used for an ostrich making a nest, cleaning stones from where it is about to lie down, the place where it lays its eggs and the egg itself.

Indeed, the Earth is round, in a manner reminiscent of an egg. The slightly flattened spherical shape of the Earth is known as geoid. From that point of view, the use of the word "daha" contains important information about the shape that Allah has given to the Earth. For hundreds of years, people imagined the Earth to be completely flat and only learned the truth thanks to technology. Yet, this fact was revealed in the Qur'an fourteen centuries ago.

THE SEAS NOT MINGLING WITH ONE ANOTHER

He has let loose the two seas, converging together, with a barrier between them they do not break through. (Qur'an, 55:19-20)

This property of the seas, that is, that they meet and yet do not intermix, has only very recently been discovered by oceanographers. Because of the physical force called "surface tension," the waters of neighbouring seas do not mix. Caused by the difference in the density of their waters, surface tension prevents them from mingling with one another, just as if a thin wall were between them.

It is interesting that, during a period when there was little knowledge of physics, and of surface tension, or oceanography, this truth was revealed in the Qur'an.

CHEST CONTRACTION WITH INCREASING HEIGHT

Human beings need oxygen and air pressure in order to live. Breathing is made possible by the oxygen in the atmosphere reaching the air sacs in our lungs. As elevation rises, however, atmospheric pressure goes down as the atmosphere becomes thinner. Therefore, the amount of oxygen entering the blood stream declines and it becomes harder to breathe. As the air sacs grow narrow and contract, we feel as if we cannot breathe.

If the amount of oxygen in the blood is less than the body needs, several symptoms emerge: extreme fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and loss of judgement. When a certain height is reached, it finally becomes impossible for a human being to breathe at all. This is why we need oxygen bottles and special clothing in order to survive at such elevations.

Someone at 5,000-7,500 metres (16,500-24,500 feet) above sea-level may faint and go into a coma because of breathing difficulties. That explains the presence of oxygen equipment in airplanes. There are also special systems that regulate air pressure when planes fly at 9,000-10,000 metres (29,500-33,000 feet) above sea-level.

Anoxia occurs when oxygen fails to reach the tissues. This oxygen deficiency occurs at heights of 3,000-4,500 metres (10,000-15,000 feet). Some people even lose consciousness at such elevations, but can be saved by immediate oxygen treatment.

In the comparison made in the verse below, this physical truth, the changes that take place in the chest with increasing height, is indicated in these terms:

When Allah desires to guide someone, He expands his breast to Islam. When He desires to misguide someone, He makes his breast narrow and constricted as if he were climbing up into the sky. That is how Allah defiles those who have no faith. (Qur'an, 6:125)

Miracles of the Qur'an - Modern Science Reveals New Miracles of the Qur'an

When we say that the Quran is divine, we have proof to back it up!

Salaam :)

The scientists themselves are admitting that these miracles are indeed sceintific miracles!; just hear a European sceintist himself relate his story of how he realised that Muhammad [saw] couldn't be the author of the Quran, and that it had to be God, May he be exalted:

What confuses me is when Muslims laud the Qur'an as being supported by science - then attack science as against the Qur'an, such as with issues of evolution.

Sort of gives the impression of cherry picking what aspects of science are acceptable.

Also, without trying to denigrate Islam, Hindu scholars were postulating ideas on the universe, often not demonstrated until modern times, centuries - even millennia - before Mohammed. Interestingly enough, because of the spice routes travelling from India through Saudi Arabia, it wouldn't be at all surprising if some of these philosophical concepts on the universe were not already discussed in some quarters of the Middle East before the Qur'an was written.

certainly much of the cosmology that science is now discovering bears a not just cursory, but striking resemblance to that derived by the kabbalists from the book of genesis (ma'aseh bereshith) - but insofar as these conceptions are universal, it would not be unreasonable to imagine the possibility of them also being derived from the Qur'an.

however, to describe this as a "miracle" is incorrect - a "miracle" is a demonstrably, verifiably unscientific, supernatural if you like occurence. i fail to see how this qualifies. certainly it would be a support for the consistency of the Qur'an with the empirical universe, but that's not what the word "miracle" actually means.

Proof to back it up!! Ermmmm Nooooooo. What you have is vain-glorious self justification. Not at all the same thing as proof. I am with Brian on this, there are - and indeed extant throughout the Q'uran, older sources for the information some Islamic apologists would like to claim authentically their own. What you have here is the authentic plagiarism of ideas inserted to give the impression of lofty revelation. Such artifice is not proof of divine revelation by and angel to an illiterate warlord but of a deliberate effort to create something that looks weightier than it is.

Hi Brian

Please do not think that all Muslims think the same way. Many Muslims believe in evolution. Not in the form as described by Darwin but as man evolving over time. We do not believe the literal saying that G-d created the world in x number of days (what is a day to G-d? And who but G-d could answer that question?).

This is from a site called Understanding Islam, which describes how the evolutionary process fits within Islam:

The above verses clearly tell us that in the beginning man was created from clay. The words 'creation from clay', obviously, do not necessitate that God created an effigy of man from clay and then gave life to it. It may, as we know, imply that in the beginning man came into existence out of the earth [the mud or the clay etc. of the earth]. In other words, God inculcated in earth - mixed with water - the potential to produce life. Over centuries or even millennia, the life-bearing potential of the earth materialized and a species quite similar to, yet somewhat different from man was born[1]. This was the first stage in the creation of man, as is evidenced by the words: "He started the creation of man from clay".

Does Islam Refute Evolution?

It is a shame I am not home in Egypt, I have many books about Islam & science (which I got from Al-Azhar) which explain many surprising issues that show how Islam and science is completely compatable.

It is such a shame that Islamic scientific achievements are so overshadowed by how Muslims choose to put that information across. The Middle East had made strides in science and medicine before the advent of Islam, so Islam as a faith cannot take credit for this (in 271AD the School of Alexandria was opened and advanced the worlds medical knowledge, particularly regarding the central nervous system).

The Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) told the Muslims to 'seek knowledge, even to China'. Islamic science does not seem to come about in any significant way until some time after the death of the Prophet (my understanding is that the Muslims were busy Empire building for some time ;)). However, once they had built their Empire there was a tremendous push toward education (during the 8th to 13th centuries). Unlike many other 'conquering nations', the most prized 'war booty' were manuscripts. I would not assert that Muslims worked in a bubble but I would also not agree that they simply pinched all their ideas.

Howard R Turner wrote a good book called "Science in Medievil Islam". It is quite an unbiased look at the achievements of Islamic science, yet acknowledges the influences of Greece, India and China, through the travels of Muslims and exchange of information.

You might like to look up Abdul Wafa and his work in trigonometry and spherical geometry (also his sine and tangent tables). Omar Khayyam solved third and fourth degree equations by intersecting conics. Al-Baruni wrote manuscripts explaining the rotation of the earth on its axis (500 years before Galileo). Ibn al-Haytham did amazing work in optics. These achievements should not be forgotten or overshadowed by differences in faith, they were scientific achievements by man (who just happened to be of the Muslim faith).

As for the Quran, yes I believe it holds scientific facts, that did not become known by the scientific world for centuries after the Quran was written. These of course are subject to interpretation. I would not call them miracles (as BB says, this is using the term miracle out of context) but I do believe it is knowledge from G-d to confirm for Muslims, at a time when we are lost in capitalism, that the Quran is from G-d and as followers it is a sign that we must hear and obey. Certainly I would agre some of the scientific knowledge held in the Quran would have been known at the time but not all, some has not been established until very recent years.

Peace to you all,

I just want to bring this interesting thread back to discussion.

Is science a reliable measure for the accuracy of a holy book? What if a holy book contradicts science? Do people lose faith in their holy book if it goes against scientific facts?!
