On the contrary, Q, they were astoundingly ignorant about how God's world works, and took everything that they could not understand as directed at them, although most things in nature are not aimed personally at all.

Me thinks you best read the Old testament again...God had a habit if interacting directly with people on a regular basis. He even put the "writing on the wall" before a whole troupe of partiers...

People were not "ignorant" of God...they "ignored" God, much to their chagrin...

Being the type of person I am, I love this teaching in the Bible (which is actualy two verses that I combined into one)

Proverbs 1:7 & 9:10
"Fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom and knowledge."

"His strength is made perfect in our weakness."

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

Boasting in weakness is difficult.
 
Hmmm....

My favorite scriptures and teachings are those that deal with unconditional love, forgiveness, closing the door and praying in private, not on the street corner, actions are stronger than words.

The book of Daniel ................ history written in advance
Much of the book of Daniel focuses on the theme of world rulership, a subject that is of paramount concern today.

To "boast of one's weakness" is to declare that only the Lord God can do for the one, because the one has no means by which to accomplish what must be done. It is an heraldry declaring that God is indeed the greatest of all and can take care of all, without one's help.

When a baby cries, it "boasts" of its weakness, so that those capable can come to the aid of the weak.

"If I must, I will boast of my weakness..." (If I must, I will cry as an infant cries, for help from He who can help me...)

My favorite passage comes from Isaiah 45:7. God is speaking, and He says:
I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil; I the Lord do all these things.

This passage first clears up the question, How come there is evil in the world? God is explaining that in order to understand light, and the forming of it, there must be darkness for contrast. A room completely lit from every angle would be no easier to see in than a room completely dark. In order for us to choose light, we must be offered darkness. The second clause is also a list of polar opposites, and again, in order to create peace, there must be evil for contrast. God goes on to confirm that evil exists because He made it as part of the process of defining peace.
A bit deeper is the fact that the opposite of evil is not "good", as we have been taught. Good can be hard to discern, and often is relative. Peace, on the other hand, is a bit plainer. When faced with a choice, I can run a "peace check", and this often informs my ability to make a "right" decision. This is why judging other people and feeling at liberty to "correct" them, while it may seem "good", is not what Jesus would have us do, because judgementalism works against peace, and is therefore a doorway to evil.
