Was Jesus a Pharisee?

Jesus most fits as a pharisee. Although he teachings certainly have a strong Essene flavor; John the Baptist (Jesus' cousin) was an Essene and there were Essene communities in Galilee so Jesus would have been exposed to their philosophies. And Jesus' baptism is a pivotal point in his ministries.

Hey feleron.

Welcome to the c-r.com.

Could you say a little about ritual immersion among the essenes? It was a pharisaic practice as well but the application of it for removal of sin isn't present there.

Chris,

As I already told you:
Anyone educated in this field knows that the only sect of Judaism that had rabbis was the Pharisee and even the Christian NT described him as a rabbi. Parkes, Bagatti, Wilson, Charlesworth; all world-recognized authorities in this area leave no doubt that Ribi Yehoshua was a Pharisee, of the school of Hileil - who was also Pharisee. There is no serious dispute about that among scholars in the field. Ribi Yehoshua taught in "synagogues"; which were a strictly Pharisee institution.

Here is one of the Scholars I refer too:

If you don’t read the Scholars and find any errors in them – their Scholarship stands. Their Scholarship about that Ribi Yehohsua is a Pharisee is correct until you prove it’s not by finding errors in their Scholarship.

Netti-Netti:

1. Remember:
The earliest extant Church historian, Eusebius further documented (EH III.xxvii.4-6) that the original Netzarim accepted only the Jewish Tana"kh as Bible and only The Netzarim ("their own") Hebrew Matityahu (NHM) as an authentic account of the life and teachings of Ribi Y?hoshua, never accepting the the 2nd-4th century, heavily gentile-redacted (Greek), NT.

2.
The Netzârim were dormant from 135 C.E. until the 1970s. Until they were ousted by gentile Roman "bishops" that year, the only evidence of dispute between the Netzârim and Perushim, other than condemning sanctimony, appears to have been with the Roman-collaborating, Boethusian-Herodian "Perushim" loathed by the mainstream Perushim .

dauer - I didn't mean to reference baptizing as essene, but John's way of life. He gave up worldly goods and lived simply in the desert and preached.
