A school provoked fury last night by ordering a devout Catholic schoolgirl to remove her cross necklace because it posed a health and safety risk.

Teachers demanded Samantha Devine remove her chain and tiny crucifix despite allowing Muslim and Sikh pupils to wear symbols of their religion.

Her family have vowed to fight the decision "all the way" claiming it discriminates against Christians.

Paul Jackson, the school's deputy headteacher, said: "The school has a policy of no jewellery to be worn by any students in years seven to ten. All parents and students are aware of this.
Anyone know how this is predjudicial?

As a soccer coach, we demanded the same of our girls. And if they had braces they had to wear a mouth guard. Now if I had Muslim or Sikh girl who wore a headscarf...that wouldn't violate the code...but earings, rings, necklaces, regardless if they had crosses on them or not...they came off, or they couldn't play.

Guess I was lucky no one found out....

The girl was not practicing sports. She was registering for classes. According to the article, children regualarly wear secular jewelry and are not admonished for it. Other children with different faiths regularly wear apparel that represents their faith. This girl was singled out after less than a month. On these facts alone, the parents will win their law suit should they press for one. It is pure selective discrimination of a particular religious faith, and it happens to be Christianity.

Namaste Q, we must have read different articles. I could swear it said that she was asked to remove the chain for safety reasons, and that a crucifix as a lapel pin would be ok. When we were kids all our 'hoodies' had draw strings, all our winter coats with hoods had draw strings, these have been taken out of clothing as children have died on playground equipment. This has caused regulations against neckware of youth. True her necklace was small and if caught would probably break, but if not and something happened...these parents would obviously sue...as others have which have caused the regulation.

The item in question here, according to the article I read, was not the crucifix, but the chain.
The Devines were told she should remove her chain because it breached health and safety rules. But Mr Devine said: "I have seen other religous pupils at the school who are not part of the Christian fath, but they are allowed to wear their religious garments and symbols without being questioned....Paul Jackson, the school's deputy headteacher, said: "The school has a policy of no jewellery to be worn by any students in years seven to ten. All parents and students are aware of this.
"In this particular instance, the student and parent were informed that wearing the chain was a health and safety hazard, but that we would allow a lapel badge to be worn.

Obviosly we have read different articles. She was told to take her cross off or be expelled. She said NO! Next move is up to the school...

The youngster last night vowed to continue wearing her necklace to school - even if it means being expelled....The vast majority of schools ban jewellery as part of their uniform policies and head teachers' leaders remained defiant last night, declaring all neck chains - regardless of whether they are religious - must stay banned for health and safety reasons...."I felt really upset and shocked when the teacher told me take off my necklace and crucifix....She said: "Although no one has actually said she will be suspended or disciplined for wearing the crucifix..."She has been made fully aware that she is breaking a school rule, but Danny and myself have told her to stand up for what she believes in. "If it all comes to a head, I don't want to even think about removing her from the school ..."In this particular instance, the student and parent were informed that wearing the chain was a health and safety hazard, but that we would allow a lapel badge to be worn....A spokesman for the Department for Education said: "Uniforms and dress codes are a matter for individual schools."
I've now quoted thrice from the article posted.

The only one mentioning explusion was the girl, the school has not even mentioned suspension according to the article...which the vast majority of schools have as tool to enforce the same rule, no necklaces.

Please provide links to the article you are reading.

A. I am a Christian, I don't jump on Christians I disagree with frivolous lawsuits and making mountains out of molehills.

B. Not at all like you to throw up strawmen, and not back one of your statements with evidence. I've only seen one article posted to this thread, you making comments that are 100% in oppostition to what Blazzenfattyz linked to yet refuse to indicate where?? I got used to your impeccapble honesty and forthrightness, feels bad being let down.

Is it me?

... Is it me, or quite latley has there been alot of this crap?

"ooh you can't wear your mask it makes me cwy..." :(
"OH! No prayers!! You make me very upset..." :(
"No don't wear that!! That makes baby jesus cwy!" :(
"You can't wear that cross!! it upsets these people...." :(

What? Why? Like I said in a previous thread.. Think it was the 'smoking' thread.. This world is getting soft and turning into a bunch of p*ssys. Just let people do/wear what the hell they want... When you try to make things "equal" and "fair" and not to discriminate agaisnt others.. You do... You pee people off to no end... You just switch the side of who is now being discriminated agaisnt...
