human cloning

Perfect Cloning... when they were working on sheep, prior to Dolly, a whole lot of mistakes were thrown in the garbage...imagine that with humans...

The human genome is not as you may anthropocentrically think the most complex seen. I think we have about a 1/3 fewer genes than some rodents. At the early stages of such complex experiment you expect many failures. There may be successes we do not even know about! Something I often think watching mainstream media presenters.

Whether or not any individual, organisation or nation finds this acceptable or not is, for me, one crucial aspect of this subject.

Just because something can be done does not, to me, mean that one should do it.

In an ideal world I'd agree. But the whole field has the same scale for negative potential as the development of nuclear weapons thus many national powers will be competing to stay at the top of the game. Whether we like it or not.

Competing to see who can drain their resources faster?
Competing to see who can abandon any semblence of morality faster?
Competing to see who can follow the sirens' song to shipwreck on the rocks quickest?

I agree. And your analogy is good because nuclear research and applications is another area heavy with ethical questions. Like most other individuals my influence on my own government let alone that of other countries is negligible to non-existent. But this does not mean that my attitudes, opinions and behaviour need to be somehow expedient, based upon what may be seen as a foregone conclusion of what the future holds. The future does not exist yet; it is created in the present. And so I maintain attitudes, opinions and behaviour based upon my internal ethical compass. This may constantly be at odds with a “less than ideal” world but it’s how I get to sleep at night.

I often wished that my brain was wired differently, that I was not compelled to look for the sh1t. But it is. Yet still there are many things that are interesting and amaze me constantly, its not all doom and gloom till you look at it that way. A couple of glasses of red and a cuddle from my gf and I still sleep good ;):D
