was he not referring to the particular Jews he was talking with, not all Jews he himself was a Jew.

You are correct, NCoT. He was speaking to the scribes and pharisees (teachers of scriptural law). Jesus was Jewish after all (as you say). I should have phrased it better and not made it look as if I thought he was speaking about all the Jewish people. Those he call children of the devil, vipers, hypocrites, etc. were the scribes and pharisees, or rather the religious teachers in the Jewish community.
