Empaths-an interesting tale

Kim, (Path of One), is quite the interesting woman. Scientifically trained-Ph.D in anthropology-and personally highly prone to a variety of "non-ordinary" experiences. Among them, she has commented from time to time here about her experiences as an emotional empath-as I said, empaths come in 2 flavors, emotional and physical. Perhaps, if/when she returns she would gift us with more discussion of that phenomena. However, point is there are many human phenomena that occur and are what they are. Just because the phenomena cannot be readily explained by a prevailing materialist worldview doesn't mean they do not exist and, perhaps science may shed light on them in the future. Problem with researching "psychic" phenomena of any sort is first of all the unpredicatable occurrence of them in general. earl

We are all empaths, but the majority of people have their perceptual reducing valve turned way way down, or shut off altogether.
This explains the heart of stone vs. the heart of flesh metaphor of the NT.
Those who have been "reborn" (meaning "awakened") will find that they are now able to feel what others feel in many ways which they had no clue about while they were in the "heart of stone" phase (meaning ungerminated consciousness).
Theology according to Shawn.

this reminds me on the siddhi thread. maybe it is all glandular/valvular! more studies will reveal more results on whatever is trying to be disproved, l don't know what the status of scientific testing of glandular activity is, but combining it with Eastern wisdom speculations/experiental over millenia and astrological profiling [water/menstrual cylces]/consciousness studies [noetics/neuroscience] may prove fruitful, certainly more holistic. And theology, if Shawn says so!

As far as that scientifically trained yet "psychic" combo goes, here's a short piece on emtional empaths by Dr. Judith Orloff, a psychiatrist & prof at UCLA who is herself purportedly an empath. Only post the link to illustrate these sorts of "combos" are out there, not necessarily because I endorse her work. She also purports to be a medical intuitive-now that's an interesting phenomenon. earl
Netscape Search

yes Earl these studies are happening more and more and that link points out one of the things l was going to mention about the general trend of fat mediums! but thought it too insubstantial to do so then.

Speaking of medical intuitives, back to my wife.:) She has no medical training, runs an herbal store. She is though generally somewhat intuitive-or maybe psychic. She does not consider herself a medical intuitive, but does often come up with accurate medical info for folks from God knows where. Just recently a good friend of hers had for months been discussing her medical problems with her and her ongoing medical consultations-how the docs could not determine a cause. My wife kept suggesting it was her gallbladder. Just this past week that friend informed her that a doc finally confirmed it was her gall bladder.;) earl

Cynicism can be a handy defence and perfectly decent natural reaction - but cynicism by itself values nothing, as Oscar Wilde noted.

You may think I'm a cynic, but you'd be mistaken. I have had many unexplainable things happen in my life too.

About ten years ago, my wife and I were looking for agates on a beach near where we live. I found this small bar with symbols on it half buried in the sand. I'd call it metal, but it's a material I've never seen before. I can't cut it or bend it and it doesn't rust or tarnish.

The symbols look, frankly, alien. I've never seen a language or letter form like this. There's fifty-six characters "imprinted" on the bar. But not with ink, or paint and they're not inscribed or embossed. It's really the strangest thing I've ever seen in my life. I call it my Alien Artifact.

I would love to see that! how about taking a picture and posting it?

So you have some materials which are unknown in our universe, I told you, you were doing alchemy :D !

Here is how you can determine what it is, CZ, next time you take an airplane, put the bar in your carry on luggage, when you pass through security, they will do a complete analysis for you, at no charge :D !!

Checked mine this am and it was down. She checked hers right after and again within a few points of mine. Well for the folks who are into measuring, numbers don't lie though causation is an open, interesting matter. But find the "empathic blood pressure" thing fascinating and somewhat amusing. Hope I don't kill the poor gal.:D

Earl,

I hope you don't kill her either! Your story makes me very grateful that I'm not a physical empath, although I have a strong tendency towards emotional empathy with people I'm close to. Physical empathy sounds like it can definitely be hazardous to your health!

OK..here is an example where I don't understand why we have to look at this from just a scientific POV. Earl is sharing a personal experience that has both scientific and spiritual dimensions. I experienced my daughter's pregnancy symptoms for the first 3 months she was pregnant from morning sickness and vomiting to extreme fatigue (all gone now and believe me, I hated being pregnant.) And we are not the same age; eat the same food or do the same activity. I see this as an empathic experience as well. Of course, I really don't know the entire history between Tao and earl but why does CZ need to be so sarcastic?

Not everyone is looking for an argument for the sake of arguing.

Janz,

Very well stated. I don't understand why we always have to look at such phenomena as your empathetic pregnancy symptoms (less common than high blood pressure) from a scientific POV either. I don't think the classic scientific method is very well suited to this kind of investigation. Just by the nature of these experiences, it's impossible to design a repeatable experiment.

Sometimes it feels as though the skeptics are trying to pressure or shame us into silence when we can't come up with a "scientific" explanation on the spot. Not speaking for anyone else but strictly for myself, I may not be able to come up with a scientific explanation to account for a particular experience, but I refuse to pretend that something didn't happen when it did!

Especially on a forum of this nature, I don't like feeling inhibited in discussing these experiences of non-ordinary reality and how I feel about them. I don't like feeling that I'm going to be immediately challenged to "prove" something I may not have the slightest interest in proving if I bring up the subject at all. I found this out the hard way quite recently.

That's an absolutely brilliant idea, Avi! You ALWAYS have an answer for everything!

CZ, that metal doesn't happen to be yellow and shiny by any chance?

:)

Not only are you a cynic my friend but always chain-jerker-in-chief here.;) Perhaps you might consider a name change, something along the lines of cyniczen. Could shorten it to something catchy like cynizen.:p earl

The chain-jerker-in-chief thinks you should leave the tugging to professionals.

Repeating a punchline is so amateur.

Oh! Can't forget the winkie ;)

That means I'm joking.

Ooo, empaths. Being a physical empath would not be my cuppa tea... I just had an experience this morning, where I came home from work and my knee hurt like crazy, and then my neck started to ache. Neither, are things prone to hurting on me. Well I get home and my Dad comes out into the living room all "Man my neck is killing me!" And my brother comes down the stairs all, "My knee hurts so bad from wrestling." And I was just like, "oh no, this is not gonna start happening now..."

I've had emotional empathic experiences quite frequently. The most annoying thing with that thus-far is random people that I barely know spouting off all their woes and their whole life story for no reason. All the time... But I hope this physical aspect, if, indeed it was that, was a one time deal. I just can't deal with more achy places...

Having empathic tendencies can suck sometimes...

Lol, see CZ, I'm not the only one that thinks your a meanie sometimes.

But it's ok. I expect it. You are after all "dark sided" lol, I just noticed that again.

Scary lady!

Howdy Mort, long time no see :D !!

You have been posting for quite sometime over here at the forum now, :), and I just realized I never fully welcomed you and made your proper acquaintance :D.

So, Mort, just how old are you anyway :D ? You seem to speak like a 12 year old, but you think like a 35 year old :D ?

Also, Mort, where do you live :D ? Anywhere near your dear Auntie, in Seattle ? :D:D

You know, Mort, your Uncle, Brian, is very unhappy with aliases, he gives them infarctions :D !! But you don't have to worry about that, do you, you iddy biddy baby :D !!

I was going to ask you the same thing.

Because, sometimes you write like an adult.

And sometimes you pepper your posts more smilies than a 12 year-old school girl.

CZ,

I think Avi peppers his posts with smilies when he's ragging on someone, which seems to happen pretty often. Just an educated guess anyway. Or maybe that's empath in me coming out again?
