I first saw this story in today's (1/1/10) San Francisco Chronicle. I especially loved these quotes from one of his followers...

"Evidently he was wrong [about his previous prediction that the world end] but this time it is going to happen. There was some doubt last time, but we didn't have any proofs. This time we do."

Would his opinion of Camping change if May 21, 2011, ended without incident?

"I can't even think of that. Everything is too positive right now. There's too little time to think like that."

Apparently, there's just too little time to think, period.

And here's a little sample from Camping's website (sorry there's no direct links to this page as they used frames to to build their site. Click on the link Another Infallible Proof under the New Publications section in the left-hand navigation)...

ANOTHER INFALLIBLE PROOF THAT GOD GIVES THAT ASSURES THE RAPTURE WILL OCCUR MAY 21, 2011

God in His great mercy has given a marvelous proof that the year 2011 is the year of Judgment Day and the end of the world. Remember in 2 Peter 3:8, in the context of pointing us to the flood of Noah’s day as well as to the destruction of the world at the end of time, He declared: “one day with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.”

Years ago we learned from the Bible that the flood occurred in the year 4990 B.C. More recently we learned that Judgment Day is to occur in the year 2011 A.D. 2011 A.D. is exactly 7,000 years after 4990 B.C.

Just before the flood Noah was instructed by God that in seven days the flood would begin (Genesis 7:10-16). Using the language of 2 Peter 3:8 that “a day is as a thousand years,” it is like saying through Noah, who was a preacher (2 Peter 2:5): “mankind has seven days or 7,000 years to escape destruction.” Since 2011 A.D. is precisely 7,000 years after Noah preached, God has given mankind a wonderful proof that Judgment Day will occur in the year 2011.

God doubled the statement “a day is as a thousand years” to greatly increase our assurance that this is established by God and will shortly come to pass (Genesis 4l:32).

Comments? I know I have a few. But it would be better for me to cool down, take a pill, and relax a little before subjecting you to them.

Don't let the loonies get you down bro.:D
They too shall pass....just like a bout of gas.

I want to know where the rest of the date came from. His bday? At least this isn't one of those Bible codes but really. I have heard it all though because my dad is into all the Revelations / End Times prophecy stuff. The UN and the EU are preparing the way for the anti Christ and Obama possibly IS the anti Christ. Ugh. The 'day with the Lord = 1000 days' is an old one that gets used all the time in this sort of stuff. Don't people see that this information can be twisted multiple ways to suit multiple interpretations or even conflicting prophecies? Heh oh my.

Didn't the Jehovah's Witnesses go through a series of end of world predictions when they started, and then just gave up doing so when they didn't happen?

I live each day with a satisfaction that if it were my last....I'm ok with that.

So 5/21/11 or whatever...no worries for me.

And on 5/22/11 I'm pretty sure we'll have a rousing update...

Honestly,

It is my belief that only God knows when that day will happen and at what time....it even says that in the bible. I know where I'm going, I'll be sad if I go now because there is still so many things I wish to experience like marriage, kids, and a career. I'm only 19 and I feel like i have so much left to do. But If he comes for me now, or on May 21st at 6:00pm, I'll go and I know where I'm going. But my point is, that Only God knows when this day really will come. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 10,000 years

Brian! 46 viewing this forum! We need to make regular apocalyptic predictions so we get more bums on seats!

OMG - 54! I got an audience! I feel quite giddy...

just got done cuttin the grass. the neighbors all seem to home. anybody missing?

there are always people predicting the end of the world as we know it.. indeed, isn't Victor doing something very much like that on a different thread? all things being equal, i find Victor's reasoning to be more sound than Camping's.

of course i'm always somewhat amazed at the ability of mind to delude itself willfully and these sorts of things are no exception. i'm sure that some of the people that were following this guy will leave but they all won't, i'd be willing to say that most of them will say and find some manner to explain away and justify another failed prophecy from this failed so-called prophet.

that said, i would have enjoyed some new furniture.

metta,

Victor didn't actually predict the end of the world, but instead that something will happen on 21st December 2012 that will surprise everyone. He mentioned previous experiences like predicting that something would happen on 9/11, 2001.

If it's not a huge natural disaster, then it's a huge political, social and economic upheaval. It could be both -- an earthquake, cyclone/hurricane, solar flare that causes massive damage to the infrastructure of a particular country and affects the entire world.

The recent earthquake hitting Japan did a substantial amount of economic damage and the Japanese were in strife for several weeks.

What do you think would happen if a solar flare knocked out some power stations? It would be like an EMP blast. Life support systems in hospitals would fail and thousands of people would die. You wouldn't be able to turn on your computer for a few hours and possibly a few days. No television. No lights. No shops. Life as we know it goes out the window, the window, the second the storey window, with a heave and a ho and great big throw, life will go out the window.

I am sure that after a few days, the population will go crazy because they've got nothing to do and start rioting and looting.

Consider the global disasters and/or political upheavals that have taken place recently:

* 9/11 and war on terror
* nuclear disaster in Japan
* SARS and swine flu outbreaks
* collapse of Lehman Brothers, subprime mortgage crisis in USA, global financial crisis
* Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda, Madrid, London and Bali bombings
* floods and cyclones in Southern Hemisphere
* Jasmine Revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya
* ban on minarets and the Islamic veil in Europe
* anti-terrorism laws
* increasing racism and ethnic separatism in Western hemisphere

Developments in Europe are disturbing. I think the Beast in the Book of Revelation is starting to emerge. I think Europe is moving toward fascism, anti-liberalism and totalitarian governments.

well... i suppose that's good then, i enjoy surprises.

what would people do? they'd try to find something to eat. i know that i would at any rate. i'm happy that i live near a lake and can go fishing and hunting and can feed myself and my family from the land around me. i suppose if the EMP wipes us out, if you can find your way to me, i'll show you a great place to catch some catfish.

which developments in Europe disturb you? i'm sorry if i'm supposed to know which one is on the front pages recently but i've not been keeping up with the news too much.

naturally, i hold no such mythology to be useful in describing the reality we engage in. i tend to agree with Mussolini when he described Fascism as Corporatism and i would suggest that all nations which are advanced capitalist nations are Coporatist.

And you think these are biblical? Has far as Camping goes its to bad he suffered a stroke shortly after another failed prediction. Do not agree with anything any religious zealot says but I hate that happened to him.

I feel kind of bad for these people. I think they are searching for hope. They are desperate for it and they designate importance to some leader who they think has a direct line to God.

Hey Citizen, don't believe the loonies. They just like to excite people into nothing. As soon as the Ark of Noah landed on the Mount of Ararat, God established the Noahide Covenant with the promise that He would never allow another catastrophe of that size to hit Mankind again, as long as seedtime, harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. (Gen. 8:21,22)

Jeremiah the Prophet read that text and connected it, in a vision of his, with the standing of Israel as a People before the Lord forever, as you can see in Jeremiah 31:35-37. His words are almost the same as in Genesis 8:22. It means IMO, that as long as Israel exists, Mankind is saved from another universal catastrophe of the size of the Noahide Flood. No wonder Jesus' declaration that salvation comes from the Jews in John 4:22. It's important to focus that he did not say from one among the Jews, but from the Jews, period.
