What are the Old Testament commandments reguarding marks (tatoos) on the Body and pierceings. I am a Christian but want to know what the Law said and how it would apply today. The reason I ask is because my husband has a tatoo on his arm of a heart. I want him real bad to put my name in that heart but I don't want to break any of God's commandments.

I'm curious - if you're Christian why are you asking about potential Jewish observances if only the Noahide Laws apply to you?

Wants to know the right way to do it ;) lol.

If you already have tattoos piercings then what is done is done I'd say. We live and learn right? As we gain knowledge previous mistakes sure we can acknowledge them as mistakes, but they are in the past we need to stop looking behind us or we'll walk into a wall. If we learn from it

' DEUT 9:19 When such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way." This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. 20 The LORD will never be willing to forgive him; his wrath and zeal will burn against that man. All the curses written in this book will fall upon him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven. 21 The LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law. '

Quick copy and paste there lol... Forgiveness comes if we reconginise and rectify. (as in not getting any more tattoos. lol)

Just curious about the history. Found a passage in the New Testament that better explains how we should live.

I do see how we are forbidden getting marks in the Old Testament but I don't see it commanded in the new. Many things have changed, like the eating of pork, the observance of a certain Holy Day, all the feast days,
not rounding the corner of beards, thithing, and many other things. We are not saved by keeping the Law, but that is Christianity. I'm so glad I'm not under the old covenant. There were just so many things-I'm sure I would fail miserably at trying to keep the law.

Quietwoman hey again,

You understand that in Judaism, only the OT (known as The Torah) is followed? Jesus may have been Jewish but in Judaism.. To coin a phrase... "He's not the Mashiach, he's a very naughty boy!"

quietwoman,

the injunctions in the Torah against tattoos and piercings are specifically aimed at avoiding practices similar to the idolatrous observances of the seven nations of canaan, as well as things to do with ancestor worship. for this reason, jews are generally prohibited from piercings through cartilage (although, say, earlobes are fine) and permanent tattoo-type markings. although this is widely disregarded amongst the non-religious, many also avoid tattoos nowadays because of the nazi practice of tattooing numbers on concentration camp inmates, but this is cultural in my opinion, despite the underlying religious prohibition.

none of this should be of concern to a christian, however. you are not obliged to follow the commandments of what you call the "old testament" - so leviticus should not be cited, for example, as a reason to prohibit homosexuality, unless you are also going to start checking your clothes for prohibited mixtures of linen and wool.

In my experience the more common reason for avoidance of tattoos among the non-religious has to do with belief in the old wives' tale that they won't be able to be buried in a Jewish cemetery with them. Perhaps it's different across the pond.
