Wow!

Of course it's easy to feel charitable when you have no kids, no wife, and your prime site Oxford home is all paid for!!

Sour grapes? No, just typically British humor. We need to get you guys out on the beach one summer, so you can mellow.

And when you have a million pounds just lying around-- or dollars, or euros, heck I'd settle for a million yen right now!

I heard him on a radio 4 show a few weeks ago and I was really moved.

This part should make us all stop and think ... "When I was earning £14,000 as a student, I found I was in the richest 4% in the world, even adjusting for how much further money goes in developing countries"

It's actually a little harder to be charitable with more money, unless you've established the charitable habit.

Say tithing....if you give 10 for every 100, it isn't so bad. A little tougher to decide to give 100 for every 1,000. or when you get a 10,000 comission and go to cut that check for 1,000. But if yoiu don't start with the 10/100 Odds are high you won't be able to do the 1k/10k... And you'll never cut the check for 1,000,000.

There are always those less fortunate than us. And we can always justify whatever we wish as reasons not to....

But that says more about us....

I suppose that's true. I find $30 a month for Oxfam and occasional dribs for Greg Mortensen even though I'm lumbering from unemployment check to check just barely. If I hit the lottery for millions, how much money would I think of giving?

Hmm yes that is true, the poorer I am the more charitable I become ... I wonder if that is why many great religious figures, from many religions, have insisted on not gathering worldly wealth?

I thought that was to eliminate the material and monetary concerns as a focus and allow them to focus on spiritual.

Is charity not a spiritual matter Wil?
Not at all. How is charity spiritual? If it is, how do you explain atheists who take part in charity? How do you define "spiritual" then? Is watching TV spiritual too? And so on.

If anyone (including atheists or people from false religions) behave spiritually then I will consider them to be spiritual. Their actions may come from spirituality or not, but to my knowledge, if an atheist or anyone else loves people then he or she is spiritual. Since you cannot actually know intent, if an athiest is charitable and generally good in other ways then treat them as spiritual people. In Christianeese language love is one of the fruits of the spirit. If you have it you are spiritual. If you have it in continually increasing amounts you are doing fantastic. I would not care if people said they were atheist in that case, because they cannot be both perfectly spiritual and perfectly unspiritual. The essence of the spiritual remains undiluted by the semantics. Perhaps they will change their semantics later, or perhaps I am the one whose understanding will need to change. What matters is the spiritual, not my understanding of it.

So if love is one of the "fruits of the spirit", why is not hate or other emotions? Whats this "spirit"? Define it and provide proof for its existence.

You don't have to believe in God to be spiritual. It is your love of humanity that makes you spiritual.

No you're getting the definitions messed up. How do you define spiritual?

If love of humanity is spiritual, why is hate of humanity not spiritual?
