As the One manifests, two do not result. Three results.

Again, when the Three manifest, in sequence ... there become Seven.

Why is each of these the case of necessity?

Chuang Tzu 2: Discussion on Making All Things Equal

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]We have already become one, so how can I say anything? But I have just said that we are one, so how can I not be saying something? The one and what I said about it make two, and two and the original one make three. If we go on this way, then even the cleverest mathematician can't tell where we'll end, much less an ordinary man. If by moving from nonbeing to being we get to three, how far will we get if we move from being to being? Better not to move, but to let things be!

The importance of the first 10 numbers (and I include the zero too) cannot be emphasized enough. The order as you smartly suggest is not important but each and every one of these numbers represent something far bigger and more important than their mundane use of counting pebbles. The deep symbolism depicts our manifested universe from the infinity. Zero, as its shape and circular form suggests symbolizes the infinite , parabrahmam the unspeakable and unutterable g-d.

P.S. Once upon a time I used to do numerology and I still do it for friends and family for free....

Zero represents the monad, the indivisible unit. On the mundane plane it is the macrocosm of the whole universe or the microcosm of the smallest self-contained sub-atomic parti-cle. Zero is the cosmic or Orphic egg. It is also the Buddhist void. Quabbalistically this is the Ain Soph Aur = "Limitless Light".

1
One is the beginning, the creation, the unity. The sun has always been associated with the number one as a symbol of life and wholeness.
Astrologically the One is connected to Sun. Aries (cardi-nal Fire) sign is the first sign of the zodiac and hence related to the number one. Quabbalistically this is the Kether = "Crown".

2
Traditionally the numeral two is associated duality, sepa-ration, conflict and is a mythogem of the opposites: Sun and Moon, male and female, life and death, etc.
Astrologically the 2 is connected to Moon. The 2 is related to the sign of the Taurus, a fixed Earth sign. Quabbalistically this is the Chokmah = "Wisdom".

3
The number three represents unity through overcoming the duality of two by adding one. Jupiter is the planet of the 3 and the 3 is also related to Gemini which is a mutable Air sign.
Quabbalistically this is Binah = "Understanding".

4
In contrast to three the number four is solidity of the earth and the cube. The four cardinal points: east, west, north and south; and the four elements of air, earth, water and fire symbolize inner ordering related to psychic wholeness. The four quarters of the moon in their waxing and waning phases has always been a mythogem for the stages of birth, develop-ment, maturity and death.
Four’s planet is the Uranus and Cancer a cardinal water sign of the 4’s sign of the zodiac’s. Quabbalistically this is Gedulah = "Mercy" or "Loving Kindness".

5
The human microcosm or natural man equals two arms, two legs and a head. Mercury and Leo (a fixed fire element) are connected to the 5. Quabbalistically this is Gebruah = "Severity" or "Justice".

6
Six signifies love, beauty, romance, harmony, and balance between male and female principles. In Genesis it represents the six days of creation. The Planet of the six is the Venus while it is connected to the Virgo (mutable earth) element.
Quabbalistically this is Tiphareth = "Beauty".

7
Many mystical systems are based on the number seven. The seven Chakras from India, the ancient number of the uni-verse were the seven visible planets before the discovery of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Corresponding to this in al-chemy, each of the seven planets is represented by a metal: sun=gold, moon=silver, Mercury= quicksilver, Venus=copper, Mars=iron, Jupiter=tin and Saturn=lead. The 7 is ruled by Neptune and it is the Libra sign. (The 7th sign of the zodiac)
Quabbalistically this is Netzach = "Victory".

8
Eight is an infinity symbol, also a symbol for the worlds of the conscious, unconscious and the loop which flows back and forth between them. The eight spokes of the ancient wheel held the center and outer rim together.
The 8 is ruled by the Saturn and as the 8th zodiac is Scor-pio (a fixed water element). Quabbalistically this is Hod = "Splendor"

9
Nine in numerology equals the end of a nine year cycle. In human biology it symbolizes as the nine month gestation of pregnancy. It can be a time to give birth or a return to a past cycle or pattern. The 9 is ruled by the planet Mars and con-nected the Sagittarius the 9th sign of the zodiac, this is a mutable fire sign. Quabbalistically this is Yesod = "Founda-tion".

10
Numerology does not use the number 10 as any signifi-cance. In the Quabbalah it is Malkuth = "Kingdom", it is associated with the realm of matter/earth, our physical exis-tence.

Wonderful responses, thank you both!

Coming at it from a cosmological angle but also an abstract one, there is the first manifestation of the One [which itself might be considered as the `0' for reasons you mention, Hermes] ... so the Monad manifests, itself remaining in the abstract [the 0, altogether transcendent], and it's expression can be looked at as the First, or Prime, the ONE [1].

Next, regardless as to context there is further manifestation, variation or division [the TWO, or 2nd] ... but this can never occur one its own, or without an automatic springing forth of a third. Even mathematically - and this is why the point is worth considering - the One becomes the THREE, because a relationship occurs at the first moment of expression of the 1 and the 2.

Theology (and some esoteric philosophies) speak of these as the Father and the Mother ... with good logic behind the parallel. The Third aspect of manifestation is therefore the Son, which is the relationship between Father and Mother. This all preserves the ORDER of manifestation, but it is isn't what most of us are familiar with. Christian theology speaks of the 2nd Aspect of manifestation as the Son, and for good reason. But is is actually the third, sequentially, to arise.

Technically then, the feminine [MOTHER] Aspect is the 2nd in order of manifestation, seeded by the 1st Aspect [Father] ... producing the third in order [the Son], which is the same as the orphic egg, relative to the Seven.

Seven must come from three because it is the mathematical product of all possible combinations of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Aspects [regardless of what order we consider them in]. For example, the Three can combine such that the 1st Aspect predominates. They can combine such that the 2nd Aspect is emphasized, or it can be the 3rd. There can also be a combination with 1st and 2nd Aspects both emphasized, 2nd and 3rd ... or 1st and 3rd. The final combination is all three aspects, for a total of SEVEN.

The Law of Nines

The digits in all multiples of 9 will add to 9.

9 x 3 = 27. 2+7 = 9

PS my life-path number is 2 and as it should be - I've always hated being alone.. until I got on the occult path.... still, I am very sociable as all 2's are.

PPS if you want a free numerology reading/chart this is the time to PM me (all I need is a real name and birth data). It is quite amazing, you get a "road map" for the next 2 years...

I'm an 11/2 lifepath (lots of 11's in my numerology) and I relish solitude! {Although my picture is prolly in the dictionary under the "introvert" entry.}

Maybe my earlier post need a little refinement....

The number Two has a unique ability of detachment. Paradoxically it prefers group work and enjoys working in cooperation with others. It has the power to soothe and smooth the discord of others, for the 2 is the arbiter, the mediator, the diplomat, or the fact finder.
They are gentle, warm, patient, tactful, kind, and considerate. Cooperation is one of their main characteristics. They make good partners as they are easy to get along.
Two's need love, home, peace, and harmony.
The Two also has attributes of symmetry and reflection. This means that a Two can have a great affinity to the unseen and spiritual.
The twos can have musical talent or at least appreciation for beauty in music. Some have a natural rhythm and are good dancers. Two is the number of partnerships, associations.
They could be consultants, for they see both sides of the issue. The 2 has the desire to give peace, comfort, and beauty to the entire world. The 2 is a very emotional, spiritual number. Some 2's have psychic powers that should not be misused.

The negative 2's may have an inferiority complex. They dread meeting NEW people, and can be shy and timid. Some try to help others so much that they become doormats. They become easily discouraged. Negative attitudes and being un-cooperative can bring about separation or divorce.
Keywords for the two are; Cooperation, adaptability, consideration of others, partnering, mediating, Adaptable, tactful, understanding, gentle, cautious.

Hmm. I suppose you could get a zero in your number chart if your name consisted entirely of vowels or consonants. ;)

The zero serves no purpose to make a chart or understand your numbers any better. The zero transcends beyond numerology. I only include it because ITS IS THERE :)
