The Midrash Tanaim (to the Baraita of the Thirty-two Methods of Rabbi Eliezer the son of Rabbi Yossi HaGelili), mentions a number of keys or ways of assigning each letter of the Hebrew alphabet to a number. The purpose is to capture the spiritual association between words that have the same gematria. The gematria equivalence relation can give deeper insight into the spiritual connection between the words whose gematria is the same. The use of gematria can expand our awareness of the relatedness of different ideas or concepts as they are spelled out in Hebrew. Gematria can help us understand meanings which are hidden. However, gematria equivalence between words suggesting an association which is not in accordance with Jewish tradition or which is not in accordance with Torah are not considered to be valid.
Gematriot is the plural of Gematria. Why is the subject called Gematriot? Because there are multiple techniques of gematria. We list here a few of the most common ones.
Two good references on gematriot are the books by Rabbi Glazerson, Rabbi Dovid Leitner. The book by Earl David makes a comprehensive use of some of the techniques of gematria in interpreting the different sections of the Torah.

  • Matityahu Glazerson, Through the Lens of Gematria, Raz-Ot Lev Eliyahu, Jerusalem, 2007
  • Dovid Leitner, Understanding the Alef-Beis, Feldheim, New York, 2007

גימטריא Gematria Values

The gematria value of a word is the sum of the gematria values of the letters of the word. There are two conventions for the final letters. In one convention, the one shown in the table below, the five Hebrew final letters are given gematria values of 500 through 900, respectively. By this convention the gematria value of ך is 500. In the other convention, a final letter takes the gematria value of its corresponding non-final letter. So by this convention, the gematria value for the letter ך is 20 since it is the final form of the letter כ. One of the important constants in mathematics is Π, pi. It relates the diameter of a circle to its circumference. As every grade school child knows, the relationship governing the circumference C of a circle with its diameter D is C=ΠD.
It is interesting, therefore, that the sum of the inverse gematria values of the 27 Hebrew letters totals 3.1401548 about .046 % smaller than 3.141592653589, which is Π, pi, accurate to 12 decimal places.
3.1401548=1/1+1/2+1/3+1/4+1/5+1/6+1/7+1/8+1/9+
1/10+1/20+1/30+1/40+1/50+1/60+1/70+1/80+1/90+
1/100+1/200+1/300+1/400+1/500+1/600+1/700+1/800+1/900
To represent thousands, the letters used to represent the ones are used. So א, which is spelled as אלף, and is pronounced alef has the same spelling as elef, which means 1000. In a similar manner, ב represents 2000. If we sum the inverse gematria values of the 27 letters and then include then next two letters as thousands the resulting sum is more than 3.141592653589 by about .0019777 %.
3.1416548=1/1+1/2+1/3+1/4+1/5+1/6+1/7+1/8+1/9+
1/10+1/20+1/30+1/40+1/50+1/60+1/70+1/80+1/90+
1/100+1/200+1/300+1/400+1/500+1/600+1/700+1/800+1/900+
1/1000+1/2000

The relationship between words or phrases that have the same gematria is one of the ways of expounding Torah. The source for this is found in the verse Deuteronomy 32:47.
It is not an empty thing from you, for this is your life. כי לא דבר רק הוא מכם כי הוא חייכם.
Rabbi Jacob Ben Asher commonly known as The Baal HaTurim and Rabbi Aharon Rokeach, commonly known as the Rokeach, both point out that the numerical value of the first part of the verse כי לא דבר רק הוא מכם is 679. The gematria of Gematriot, גימטריאות, the plural of gematria, is also 679.
For another example of how gematria works, consider the verse Genesis 49:10.
The scepter shall not depart from Judah nor a scholar from between his feet (among his descendants) until Shilo shall arrive and his will shall be an assemblage of nations.
.לא יסור שבט מיהידה ומחקק מבין רגליו עד כי יבא שילה ולו יקהת עמים
Both Rashi and Onkelos interpret the phrase until Shilo shall arrive as meaning until the Messiah comes to whom the kingodm belongs. The Sages have taught that this verse is a primary Torah source for the belief that the Messiah will come.
The gematria of the phrase יבא שילה, Shilo shall arrive, is 358. The Hebrew word for Messiah is משיח which also has gematria 358.
What does this gematria equivalence mean? The Sages tell us that there is no superfluous word in Torah. Every word and every letter has meaning. The first part of the verse כי לא דבר רק הוא מכם uses the word דבר which was translated as thing. But דבר also means word. Thus כי לא דבר רק הוא מכם literally means for there are no empty words from you. From your mouth should come no empty words of Torah. Every letter has meaning. Go study it. Words which have the same gematria will give you hints about the fullness of Torah.
Another example of gematrai equivalence is the gematria of the tetragrammaton, the great eternal name of God, יהוה, which has gematria 26. The gematria of each of the words love, אהבה, and one, אחד is 13. Together the gematria of the two words totals 26, the gematria of the tetragrammaton. This gematria equivalence reinforces that two of the principal attributes of God are that He is one and He is loving.
The verse of Genesis 28:10 tells us
And Jacob departed from Beersheva and went toward Haran. .ויצא יעקב מבאר שבע וילך חרנה
He had lived with his family for about 63 years and having to leave was hard for him. The gematria of ויצא יעקב, And Jacob Departed is 289 which is the same gematria as טרף meaning torn apart . Jacob was torn apart having to leave his family
The Hebrew word for world is עולם. In Psalm 105:4 King David says Seek His Presence. The word for presence, literally his face is פניו. Both עולם and פניו have gematria 146. There is a very deep truth that the world shows the face of God, in the sense of the Glory of God. But to have a sense of this we must look deeper than with our eyes. For the word for world עולם comes from the root עלם, which means hidden.
Milui מילוי

Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a name and the name has a spelling. Many of the letters have two spellings and a few have three different spellings. For example, one spelling of the letter א is אלף. The milui (full form) of a word is obtained by writing out the spellings of the letters in that word. For example, one form for the milui of the word משה is מם שין הא. The gematria value of this milui is 446 which equals the numerical value of האמת, the truth. By this correspondence, Moshe is the truth.
Some of the names of the letters can be spelled several different ways. The following table shows all the various possibilities.

When cutting and pasting someone elses work....it is not only proper to provide the link, it is skirting the law to not give credit where credit is due.

If one wants to learn about this, one should visit the websites or red the works of Rabbi Glazerson (among others... but he is the author of the lifted text).

Oh come on now. I know that anyone who reads this is going to know I copy and pasted it. And the law has nothing to do with it. I was simply providing an opening to the subject from another source. Geesh some of you people tend to be really uptight.

It is a very interesting study. I spent a lot of time some years back on the subject. For example: The name JESUS is really a number 888 translated from greek to hebrew. When you study the hebrew sites of gematria you will find that number is literally the union of body soul and spirit. That is why they say the man jesus fulfilled the prophecy of being a saviour in the salvation of human beings because his human body was raised up to an immortal state.

Very very interesting in my opionion .
How far did you get in this study?

You and I are really going to disagree on this, so let it go. I do not consider "Christian Cabala" Kabballah. Someone who claims they know it probably does not.

Gematria, Kaballah, whatever floats your boat is fine.

But it's all secondary, and it's all ancilliary, and above all, it's all a construct — it doesn't add anything to the core message of revelation.

Quite the reverse, an infatuation with all things 'esoteric' simply means the individual gets caught up in what is essentially a 'side show'.

It has its place — as a hermeneutic key — and if it inspires you, then that is good and healthy because you start making the right signals.

Symbology is my thing. Not symbology as understood today, which is actually talking about signs, and radically fails to understand the meaning of symbol as such, but all of it rests on Scripture, not the other way round.

And if I had to dump one or the other, then symbology goes, and I'll keep Scripture, thanks.

But until then, I delight in the dialogue between the intellect and the will with regard to revelation in John 20, or the 153 fish caught in the net that is the world in John 21 ...

It's all highly entertaining, but, as Our Lord said: "But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:42)

At this point, I could wax esoteric about the significance of those named Mary in Scripture (indeed, the significance of those named in Scripture at all), but that's beside the point.

Donann, this site, any site can get in trouble for postings which plagerize copyright material without reference (actually without permission?)....but beyond that, if you wish to start a conversation it is best to tell folks where this conversation is starting from, what your thoughts on it are, where you got the info so folks can validate the source or look for thier references... sheesh....

but beyond that... if we wish to discuss Christianity....it would/should be in the Christian board.

me thinks Mary and John and Luke are not part of the Jewish scripture??

Yes they were Jews...but doesn't this all pertain to judaism, OT and not NT?

Thanks for the info I will post references from now on. :)
I did study jewish gematria some years back. Very interesting and insightful subject. It does pertain to judaism, ot and nt. In hebrew every letter has a number assigned to it. The combinations of numbers in a name or phrase has actual meaning. This includes the name JESUS. It is actually translated from the greek to hebrew as the cubic number 888. 888 is the number of the oneness of body soul and spirit, basically the resurrected body which is what the prophecy of jesus really means. Remember Jesus was a jew and his name was this number. There are jews for jesus that exist. The jews however are still waiting for the messiah because of daniel 12. The reason is that people will be delivered to eternal life, saved from death, sickness ect and that did not happen back when jesus was here. Christians believe this will occur at the second coming. Jesus who is what the whole new testament is really about preached from jewish scriptures. So gematria does have signifigance in the new testament as well.

I am sorry, how can there be "NT Judaism". That is like saying "Mark Twain's Shades of Grey"... does not really make any sense at all to me.

It is said that Jesus never denied Jewish scripture. That growing up he learned in the temples.

How can it? The spoken language of the people was Aramaic (largely) and the language of the text is Greek.

In hebrew every letter has a number assigned to it. The combinations of numbers in a name or phrase has actual meaning. This includes the name JESUS.
JESUS isn't Hebrew, it's Greek, there isn't a J in Hebrew ... every language has its own gematria, because gematria is a construct. I have one for English, but it's probably quite different to someone else's made-up meanings.

It's like those people who find 'hidden messages' in Bible texts. A team did an exercise and with the aid of computers, found prophecy and apocalyptic messages in Moby Dick.

But it doesn't work like that.

This is all invented after the event. There was no theology of the resurrection in Judaism in Jesus' time — speculation had crept in from Greek and other influences as a result of the diaspora, and the multi-cultural life in Jerusalem, but Judaism has always had a pragmatic view about the afterlife ... who knows?

So the idea of Jesus' name pointing to resurrection is an anachronism, it's something someone worked after the event. At the time, it would have been alien to Hebrew thinking. There was some speculation, but nothing as important as suggested. It's a piece of spin, after the event.

This retro-fitting of secret meanings to Scripture texts is, if you have the patience for it, not too difficult. Look at the JWs. They have a gematria that they revise ever time the world ceases to end.

You have the facts, you just manipulate the data until it matches ... but it's all made up. It might have some use — mostly it's used to convince the believer he's in possession of secret or esoteric data — but that's about it.

The jews however are still waiting for the messiah because of daniel 12.
No, they're waiting for a Messiah full stop.

So gematria does have signifigance in the new testament as well.
Again, only as something to do to keep the mind occupied. There is no element of Revelation that depends on gematria. There's nothing in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, nothing in St John Damascene's A Complete Exposition of the Orthodox Faith, that depends on gematria.

If it all vanished tomorrow ... nothing would change.

There is a teaching in Judaism that the entire Bible is contained in the first syllable. Because man didn't 'get it', the syllable was extended to a word. The word to phrase, and so on until the canon.

The same idea exists in many traditions. The idea of the sound 'Om' is the same.

I've read reams of explanations about 'a camel passing through the eye of a needle' — about secret gates in the walls of Jerusalem, about this, about that.

But the one that makes the most sense is ... it's a common hyperbolic phrase in Judaism. There are writings that say a camel, others say a lion ...

Read the two volumes of "The Secret Doctrine" and you'll see how inventive the mind can be at spinning something out of nothing.

Look at gods name translated to english from the hebrew. The J has the same numerical value of the hebrew letter Y. In english the name is JEHOVAH in hebrew it is YAHOVEH. A catholic monk translated the name to english. The jews did not write out the vowels in the text but for pronunciation the vowels are used. Its the same with the name JESUS.
jesus_888.gif

Here is the web site explaining this. Jesus 888

Yea!!

It means 888 which is 222 more than 666 and 444 more than 4444 and amazingly 8 times 111, 2 times 444 and 4 times 222....

we are saved!!

Unless of course you prefer 3 times 222...

but I am just being a 6 times 111 advocate.

Here is some more info to go along with the last post.
For other persons named Yeshua, or other claimed transcriptions of Jesus, see Yeshua (disambiguation). For the person, teaching, and acts of Jesus Christ, see Jesus and Historical Jesus. For the Hebrew proper name, see Yeshu. See also Jesus in the Talmud Yeshua (ישוע, with vowel pointing יֵשׁוּעַ - yēšūă‘ in Hebrew)[1] was a common alternative form of the name יְהוֹשֻׁעַ ("Yehoshuah" - Joshua) in later books of the Hebrew Bible and among Jews of the Second Temple period. The name corresponds to the Greek spelling Iesous, from which comes the English spelling Jesus.[2][3]

heard another interesting one....about a knot which is called either a camel or a lion....it is a bulbous knot that is tied at the end of a rope to keep it from slipping through....

easier for a camel (or lion knot?) to go through the eye of the needle?

or in reality easier for 867 to go into 395 than for a 564 899 to get into 999
