Favorite Song Lyrics

I love the weekend--I still get two picks, right? (The guitar solo was a freebie, I say):) More Flaming Pie, anyone?

Calico Skies

It was written that I would love you
From the moment I opened my eyes
And the morning when I first saw you
Gave me life under calico skies

I will hold you for as long as you like
I'll hold you for the rest of my life

Always looking for ways to love you
Never failing to fight at your side
While the angels of love protect us
From the innermost secrets we hide

I'll hold you for as long as you like
I'll hold you for the rest of my life

Long live all of us crazy soldiers
Who were born under calico skies
May we never be called to handle
All the weapons of war we despise

I'll hold you for as long as you like
I'll hold you for the rest of my life
I'll hold you for as long as you like
I'll hold you for the rest of my ...
For the rest of my life

Frank Zappa - I'm The Slime Lyrics

I am gross and perverted

I'm obsessed 'n deranged

I have existed for years

But very little has changed

I'm the tool of the Government

And industry too

For I am destined to rule

And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious

But you can't look away

I make you think I'm delicious

With the stuff that I say

I'm the best you can get

Have you guessed me yet?

I'm the slime oozin' out

From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you

And eat the garbage that I feed you

Until the day that we don't need you

Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you

Your mind is totally controlled

It has been stuffed into my mold

And you will do as you are told

Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks . . .

Don't touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video

Oozin' along on your livin' room floor

I am the slime from your video

Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go

I am the slime from your video

Oozin' along on your livin' room floor

I am the slime from your video

Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go

Okay--I'm breaking my self-imposed, 2-on-a-Saturday, never-touch-the-lyric-thread-til-the-weekend rule. I will confess to myself later and hope it is not too late for forgiveness.

I just gotta thank you, CCS, for offering up some Zappa. I've been wanting to do that for some time now, but I am in a quandry as to whether my fave would somehow offend . So, I guess I will, for the time being, anyway, keep my dental floss and big old, shiny tweezers packed away.;) :D

Zappa is brilliant! a man before his time with music that is timeless... i sure do miss listening to his songs..

though many may only remember the farce "Valley Girl" :)

"ok fine, fer sure, fer sure, i'm a valley girl and there is no cure.."

one of my favorites of his is Bromodrosis otherwise known as "stinkfoot" ;)

Beth (by KISS)

Beth I hear you callin'
But I can't come home right now.
Me and the boys are playin'
And we just can't find The Sound.

Just a few more hours
And I'll be right home to you.
I think I hear them callin'
Oh Beth, what can I do?
Beth, what can I do?

You say you feel so empty
That our house just ain't a home.
I'm always somewhere else
And you're always there alone.

Just a few more hours
And I'll be right home to you.
I think I hear them callin'
Oh Beth, what can I do?
Beth, what can I do?

Beth, I know you're lonely
And I hope you'll be alright
'Cause me and the boys will be playin' all night.

I wonder if Beth might have appreciated this one. ( I realize it is much better with the music, but I gotta go ahead and get it out of my system.)

By the way, Phyllis, I have been meaning to tell you that I think that is the first time I have ever really just read the lyrics to Roy Clark's "Yesterday". Profoundly sad, but beautiful writing.

Anyway, for Beth, and a lot of folks:

Little Willow

Bend, little willow
Wind's gonna blow you
Hard and cold tonight

Life, as it happens
Nobody warns you
Willow, hold on tight

Nothing's gonna shake your love
Take your love away
No one's out to break your heart
It only seems that way... hey

Sleep, little willow
Peace gonna follow
Time will heal your wounds

Grow to the heavens
Now and forever
Always came too soon

Little willow

Nothing's gonna shake your love
Take your love away
No one's out to break your heart
It only seems that way... hey

Bend, little willow
Wind's gonna blow you
Hard and cold tonight

Life, as it happens
Nobody warns you
Willow, hold on tight

Ah, little willow
Little willow

Paul McCartney, (you guessed it—Flaming Pie)

GOODBYE OLD DESERT RAT

She sits on the front porch of the old house that stands scorched
Under the sunstroke of the desert day that choked
Her old man who fell in the sun.

With rattlesnakes and keepsakes, old boxes of cornflakes,
Grammaphones and gemstones, and three unclaimed doorframes,
And bleached bones and rocks by the ton.

Goodbye old desert rat, you half crazy wildcat
You knew where it was at, what life's all about
You saver of catalogs, king of the prairie dogs
Success is survival and you toughed it out,
you toughed it out.

You old loudmouth rockhound, you kept the kids spellbound,
Half crazy and sunbaked, you earned your own grubstake;
By breakin' your back all day long.

With junk art and dump carts, old Model-T parts
Frustrated, outdated and uneducated
At eighty you still wrote good songs.

Goodbye old desert rat, you half crazy wildcat
You knew where it was at, what life's all about
You saver of catalogs, king of the prairie dogs
Success is survival and you toughed it out,
you toughed it out.

By Michael Murphy, from Blue Sky, Night Thunder

Where is that dunce hat? Pass it over here, please!

Sorry, Phyllis--as you posted, that would be Herbert Kretzmer's beautiful writing, not Roy Clark's (although he sang and played it well). And I had said the title was "Yesterday", when in fact, as you posted, it is "Yesterday When I Was Young."

I just like to keep things straight, especially when I am the one who crinkled them up!:)

To say favorite is a serious stretch, but I enjoyed them lately...

Right Where It Belongs...Nine Inch Nails

See the animal in it's cage that you built
Are you sure what side you're on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?
See the safety of the life you have built
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart
And it's all
Right where it belongs

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you wanted to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks?
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?

What if all the world's inside of your head
Just creations of your own?
Your devils and your gods
All the living and the dead
And you really are alone
You can live in this illusion
You can choose to believe
You keep looking but you can't find the woods
While you're hiding in the trees

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you used to know
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you wanted to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?

(My kids turned me on to Nine Inch Nails--I enjoy them too, jiii.) Anyone remember Kansas?

Carry On Wayward Son

Carry on my wayward son,
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Now don't you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond the illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say

Carry on my wayward son,
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Now don't you cry no more

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely
means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune, but
I hear the voices say

Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you

Carry on my wayward son,
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

...then I'd get a cup of coffee, and give my foot a push

just me and the pygmy pony over by the dental floss bush

Yeah, love Zappa. Love Kansas too. First concert I ever went to was the People of the Southwind tour.

This one's in my top five. I love, love, love Bonnie Rait.

Angel From Montgomery, by John Prine

I am an old woman
Named after my mother
An old man is another
Child whos grown old

If dreams were thunder
Lightning was desire
This old house it wouldve burned down
A long time ago

Make me an angel
That flies from montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin
Is just a hard way to go

When I was a young girl
I had me a cowboy
It wasnt much to look at
It was a free ramblin man
There was a long time
No matter how I tried
The years they just rolled by
Like a broken down dance

Make me an angel
That flies from montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin
Is just a hard way to go

Theres flies in the kitchen
I can hear them there buzzin
And I aint done nothing since I woke up today
But how the hell can a person
Go on to work in the morning
To come home in the evening
And have nothing to say

Make me an angel
That flies from montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin
Is just a hard way to go

I love a well hooked lyric. I love this line from Joni Mitchel's That Song About the Midway, also sung by Rait:

I met you on a midway at a fair last year
And you stood out like a ruby in a black mans ear
You were playing on the horses, you were playing on the guitar strings
You were playing like a devil wearing wings, wearing wings
You looked so grand wearing wings
Do you tape them to your shoulders just to sing

China Cat--this is just spooky--how are you getting inside my thoughts like this??? I've been thinking of posting those very songs. :D

Went to Farm Aid one year, and left before the surprise guest--ugghh! never forgave ourselves, 'cause it was Bonnie. ( J.D. also covered Angel from Montgomery, but I'm betting you know that! ):)

I never heard her do the "Midway" song....

Went to the first Farm Aid. AWESOME !!!

Bonnie has always been one of my favorite Blues people since she started in the 70's. And I'd say that she's the best bottle finger guitar player alive...bar none. Thanks guys, you brought back alot of warm and good memories.

flow....:p

Here are two, the first was sung by Bonnie Raitt (I don't know who wrote it, though) and the second was done by Kansas.

I Can't Make You Love Me (sung by Bonnie Raitt)

Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize
Don't patronize me.
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't.
I'll close my eyes, then I won't see
The love you don't feel when you're holdin me
Mornin will come and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight.
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't.

The Wall (Kansas)

I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little
more like something dear was lost
It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between,
All I am, and all that I would ever want be
It's just a travesty, towering, marking
off the boundaries my spirit would erase

To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimpse the other side,
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
I want to see

Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me I know it well
The treasures that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me, I must tear down the Wall and let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
THERE IS NO LOSS

Namaste all,

Staind, Fray:

I know that it never goes away
All I feel, everything I'm not today
So I try and I try to make everything right
I don't feel like I'm doing it, it affects me

You wouldn't listen even if I told you
Who the f**k am I to say?
You're too busy with the lies they sold you
Another cure to fix your day
Open wide for all the **** they feed you
While the TV defecates
And blindly walk wherever they lead you
While the edges slowly fray

I know that everything can change
What I need is to open up again
And never will I look back in vain
'Cause today's not the past,
I don't even need to relieve it

You wouldn't listen even if I told you
Who the f**k am I to say?
You're too busy with the lies they sold you
Another cure to fix your day
Open wide for all the **** they feed you
While the TV defecates
And blindly walk wherever they lead you
While the edges slowly fray

Are you satisfied?
I've given it all I can
And are you pacified
Or do you want more from me?

You wouldn't listen even if I told you
Who the f**k am I to say?
You're too busy with the lies they sold you
Another cure to fix your day
Open wide for all the **** they feed you
While the TV defecates
And blindly walk wherever they lead you
While the edges slowly fray

I've learned that this life's not just a game
Just a line between the pleasures and the pain

You wouldn't listen even if I told you
Who the f**k am I to say?
You're too busy with the lies they sold you
Another cure to fix your day
Open wide for all the sh*t they feed you
While the TV defecates
And blindly walk wherever they lead you
While the edges slowly fray

I saw those Kansas lyrics when I was looking up the others, and thought they were awesome. I am a pretty big Kansas fan, but I don't remember hearing that one. I am going to have to find that audio.

I have missed two Saturdays in a row now, I guess. So when I get to posting again, watch out! :D

Favorite lyrics, rather than favorite songs?

Interesting question. If you consider the lyrics of the song as poetry only, I think the hands down winner (for lifetime achievement) is Paul Simon.

It's easy to read his lyrics as poetry, the scansion is near perfect, the imagery spectacular.

Regards,
Scott
