Mine will be spent with my Mother, Sister and some friends who don't have family around... I'll see my kids on Saturday, they are with their mother today...

While we know the holiday and its origins have some issues with mythology and negativity regarding our actions back then.... I am thankful for continued growth in regards to human rights here and around the world, thankful for family and extended family...and friends....and the discussions I've had here over the years.

If you are from the states, and celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you have a wonderful day!

Well wishes from here as well.
Thanksgiving isn't something we have remotely tried to celebrate here through. It's very American.

Though, I know that. The whole world knows about your little...event...

Happy Thanksgiving, Wil.

Was at a delayed Thanksgiving gathering yesterday. Sweet potato and marshmallow pie? You guys are really weird! :D

After the meal everyone had to say what they were thankful for, which I thought was a nice touch.

It's not a big deal here, although we do Canadian Thanksgiving because a daughter's partner is ... can you guess? ;)

If we don't do Thanksgiving, 'Black Friday', it seems, has caught on. Walmart introduced it here last year through a UK supermarket chain it owns, and this year all the supermarkets got into it, so thanksgiving has become another spendfest like Christmas, Easter, etc.

So the usual scrums, fights, chaos, FOMO ... consumerism, 'red in tooth and claw'.

Grrrrrrrrr. Capitalism run amok. Making money is a wonderful thing, but not to the exclusion of everything else. People should be free to enjoy those special holidays, unless they hold some particularly important occupation, like firefighter, or ER doctor/nurse, etc.

Shopping is NOT on the list. But I blame the consumers as much as the corporations. If people didn't rush out to shop on holidays, businesses would not be open on holidays. I often want to stand in front of the local Wally World with a huge sign stating to the people rushing in the door 'You Are The People Who Are Responsible For These Workers Having to Work On The Holiday!'

Somebody needs to do a mash up of Fergusen, Black Friday, and fans after a big game win... perspective....

Yes...the food choices are often weird and not at all original Tday but the giving thanx part, the appreciation, like the giving at Christmas....needs to be opened up and extended throughout the year...

Do your fans cause trouble after a game? I thought American football was cooler than that. Here if there's trouble, it's usually at the game. Soccer only. Our big problem is racist chanting. And players' sexual antics.

In our house, the view is there's too much money invested in the sport, and so fans and players are allowed to get away with stuff that in any other circumstance is unacceptable. But then money talks. I watched an impassioned rant by a US sports commentator over that case in which a high-profile player decked his girlfriend in a lift ... sorry ... punched his girlfriend unconscious in an elevator ... and got away with it. It was a 'is this what it's all about?' kinda rant. Stirring stuff.

In balance, we had a case of the shooting of an apparently unarmed black man here, and there was a huge uproar.

... but the giving thanx part, the appreciation, like the giving at Christmas....needs to be opened up and extended throughout the year...
You said it.

Hey, you need to quash another rumour. Facebook, I was told, is saying it's 'Black Friday' because of the slave sales after Thanksgiving! Google tells another story.

Yes our fans (fanatics) burn cars, busses, couches, riot and loot after uni and professional wins...it is crazy...

And yes our players think nothing of 10k and 25k fines for various indiscretions when they are paid millions...

And Yes Ray Rice decked his fiance, and she married him, and they have lifted his ban against playing and he is now searching for the team which will pick him up...

When we train and pay and provide bonuses to be monsters on the field....we turn them into animals in the coliseum for our entertainment... how is it we are surprised when they can't turn that off??

oh and yes, the black friday meme... I've been posting the snopes response everytime I see it...

Folks like to get attached to these things and have issues when you point out the error...

I'm just finishing up what I made on "Turkey Day" (aka Thanksgiving): pumpkin ravioli (the recipe makes roughly 4 servings, so I have an automatic portion control here.) The :kitty:s are finishing their chicken and turkey in a cheesy sauce (from a tin, not homemade, so you can relax.)

I don't buy much of anything on Black Friday (or any other day, for that matter.) I'm sending greeting cards from the Humane Society with a recipe tucked inside to some, and getting the :kitty:s a couple of toys that are on sale (gotta be frugal when one's on a fixed income, y'ken?)

Still eating leftovers? This leftover thread from a decade ago...

I am still grateful, not for our fictional holiday anymore, but for all it intends.

That's me at the kids table, along with two army musicians, a retired nurse, biology teacher, two librarians, an NFL cheerleader, dolphin trainer, an advocate for victims of domestic violence, a source for companion and therapy animals for folks with ptsd and a couple little ones who got no clue what they are in for.

Who am I kidding none of us do!

Today...this be my entire immediate family. 4 generations

Great picture!!
I tried to figure out who was whom!
I lost count!
Some people in the picture must have more than 1 identity
you mention 13 identities but I only see 10 faces
assuming i counted correctly!🫨

We ditched the turkey this year and had a football themed Thanksgiving dinner. While we did have pumpkin pie, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and sweet potatoes we also served up hot wings. We all love spicy food and football. It was a nice change of pace from the usual turkey.

My favorite thing is to leave town and rent a cabin or beach house to reduce the pomp and circumstance and food consumption...and leftovers!

Exactly! My niece has been toying with three jobs for years. 4 generations, my mom, my sister and I, we each have two kids, and both of her daughters gave her grandkids. Mine say they have statistically already avoided their first divorces.. lol.

Imagine a platter of hot turkey wings!! 🍗 😋

My immediate family is vegetarian; my extended family is not. Thanksgiving is annoying.

We cut a deal this year that my family will show up after the meal. That worked well for everyone.

Yeah, we used to have a situation where a friend's daughter had Thanksgiving with her boyfriend but came to our house for dessert.
