After His Passion aka His Suffering
That's about the report given by Luke about Jesus when this appeared to his disciples for 40 days after his passion aka his sufferings. (Acts 1:3)
I would like to bring to the attention of those who are unable, for obvious reasons, to focus on the meaning of the words, "After his passion or suffering" that, after one's passion or suffering is no evidence even that one died, let alone that he resurrected.
It just happens that Luke was right and here is why: According to Josephus, a famous Jewish historian of the First Century, it was not uncommon for Jews to linger on their crosses for up to 3 or 4 days, in and out, till death would eventually catch up with them.
We are talking about the high odds that Jesus was still alive when he was taken off the cross. It was so obvious that even Pilate himself, a man accustomed to crucify Jews almost daily, was surprised that Jesus had died so soon. Hence he summoned the Centurion to check him out before releasing his body to Joseph of Arimathea. (Mark 15:42-44)
It happens though that Joseph of Arimathea was too rich a Pharisee and we all know the power of money which a Roman soldier, even a Centurion did not have to be too corrupt to use some. (Mat. 27:57) The bottom line is that the Centurion got some of the money of Joseph, this got the body of Jesus and Pilate got the word that Jesus was dead.
The tomb Joseph had taken Jesus into was of the VIP kind of a walk-in tomb. In order not to call for unnecessary attention, Joseph laid Jesus in that tomb, rolled the tombstone to the entrance and went for help to move Jesus elsewhere and to take care of his wounds. To do so, his closest friend Nicodemus, another rich Pharisee, had brought about 100 pounds of medication for that matter. (John 19:39) Then, VIP treatment guaranteed Jesus' apparitions to his disciples for the next 40 days for some last instructions.
Then, Jesus was gone and, probably with Joseph and Mary Magdalene. Joseph because if the secret got revealed, not only Jesus would be taken back to the cross but also Joseph for having made a fool out of Pilate.
About 30 years later Paul chowed up preaching a gospel that Jesus had been the Messiah, son of God and that he had resurrected. (Acts 9:20; II Tim. 2:8) It was a success as Paul impressed many with his gospel except the Apostles of Jesus who were well aware why Jesus had to leave. And, obviously, the Apostles took the secret to their graves. (Acts 9:26)
