How To Break Boko Haram ? Gen Gumi |

In short the General of the Nigerian Army is suggesting that an Islamic Debate be held with Boko Haram Leadership/members. This Would be a Fantastic idea, if it would work. I doubt its effectiveness, but I pray that I am wrong and it brings a screeching halt to the organization.
 
Most of the followers are misguided by warped hadiths and power hungry imams willing to send them to their death.... if this is exposed as fact... some may change their tune.

just need to get the pendulum to swing..
 
He narrated the story of a certain senior university lecturer (name withheld) who was abducted by Boko Haram and later released after he engaged the sect on its warped and misguided interpretations of Islamic sources.

Gen Gumi is going to dissuade those who are not fanatics, those who can be reasoned with. He does not assume that everyone 'on the other side' are mindless monsters who should be bombed to oblivion. He is a diplomat.
 
Yes I read the same story you quoted. The captive engaged the sect on its warped interpretations of Islamic sources - and they see the light and release him.

But they don't see enough of the light to turn from their dark path? Feels to me like there is more to the story than we are being told. Taken at face value it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Particularly as Boko Haram was founded as a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist sect advocating a strict form of sharia law. Tea, I do not know how much experience you have with fundies where you live. Here in the States I have experienced plenty. They are not people who are impressed with any form of reason, nor are they open to facts that do not support want they want to believe.

If I were to be proven wrong on this one, I would happily accept the error of my ways. I am not gonna hold my breath waiting though.

--> I learned a long time ago that when I have a religious discussion with someone, the first thing I determine is if the other person has an open mind or a closed mine. If they don't have an open mind, I have learned the best thing is to avoid religious discussions with them in the first place.

And I believe most people in this world don't have open minds.

See the thing with Sharia is that it cant be made so strict or liberal that it goes outside the premises of Sharia itself. Imposing Sharia on non-muslims is never a part of Sharia. Killing people just because they happen to be Christians or Shias is never a part of Sharia. Putting potato sacks upon women and treating them like slaves is never a part of Sharia. These things have to be taught to people. Because there are people who out of their ignorance believe that going to extremes is something that sharia asks them to do. They dont realise that Prophet Muhammad specifically forbade going to extremes in practicing religion. The more Muslims get educated in Islam the less they will do stupid anti-sharia stuff in the name of it.

Fanatics are hard headed empty people, like coconuts. Its difficult to put things in. But using the right process, once things go in, they stay there. The only process to teach these people is to tell them what they are doing is wrong, and here is the evidence from Quran and Sunnah. If you persist, you are going to hell.

And apart from that, there needs to be an end to different kinds of occupations, vassalisations and terror fundings, which are the first biggest reason for these groups to exist.

Even with you or my experience combined, I have a greater trust in the generals understanding then ours.
 
Well, I do not know if the general is a Muslim, but if he is then he is doing what is commanded in the Qur'an: if there are troublesome Muslims doing harm to the community, then other Muslims would attempt to reason with them and try to mediate between the parties in conflict. If that does not work, then force must be used unfortunately (Muslim vs Muslim that is). Not many follow that commandment, though. And how can they when some like Boko Haram just go on a killing spree. One wonders if reasoning and mediation would help at all.

Wil in Qur'an chapter 49, verse 9 we are told:

And if two parties of the believers fought each other, mediate [O you who believe!] between them; but if one of them acts wrongfully toward the other, fight the party that acts wrongfully until it returns to Allah’s command; then if it returns, mediate between them with justice and act equitably; surely Allah loves the equitable.

Peace, of course, is always the #1 option as advised by the Qur'an and permission to fight anyone, believer or not, is only given as such in chapter 22, verses 39-40:

Permission [to fight] has been granted to those against whom war is waged, because they are oppressed; and surely, Allah is well capable of assisting them [to victory] . [The permission is to] those who have been driven out of their homes without a just cause, only because they say: “Our Lord is Allah.” Had it not been for Allah repelling some people by others, then certainly cloisters, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which Allah’s name is much remembered would have been pulled down. And surely Allah will help him who helps His cause; surely, Allah is Mighty, Invincible.
