Hi

Hi Ella and welcome to the Forum.

What is it about Hinduism that appeals to you?

By the way, I am also an ex-Catholic.

Namaskaram Ella ... there are only a couple of active Hindus on this forum. I'm one of them. But I'm sure we'd be happy to discuss things with you. I must warn you, however, that Hinduism is a vast religion, the the couple of viewpoints you get here won't really do it justice.

I like Hinduism conceptually, too. If you have a Vedanta Society where you live I encourage you to check them out. Otherwise this forum is a great source for info and encouragement, if you are not too keen on face to face, personal touch.

One of the things I like about Hinduism is that you can practice the basic principles without giving up the beliefs you were brought up with. My in-laws sometimes refer to me as a Hindu devotee of Jesus.

Being a female can I assume reproductive rights are part of your issue? Or women's ordainment?

What intrigues you about Hinduism? What is your current understanding? Have you visited a local temple?

I like the Hindu concept of ParaBrahma, karma and reincarnation. Actually I know very little of the minor gods, rituals, holidays etc.
I would never bathe in Ganges...

We tried once to get to the Ganges (at Haridwar) for a dip, but a large traffic jam, Indian style, forced us to turn around. Just as it enters the plains near Haridwar or even further upstream, it's quite pristine. Cold, but pristine. As with all rivers, the pollution gets worse as you go further downstream. I'd probably still bathe at Varanasi, personally, though. It's a misconception that the Ganges is polluted it's entire length. Almost all of India's water, including any in any hotel shower anywhere can be dangerous to one's health, especially westerns who have no built up immunities over time.

DarkAsylum, are you still around?

"I like the Hindu concept of ParaBrahma, karma and reincarnation..."

--> The ideas of Parabraham, karma and reincarnation fit perfectly into my belief system as well.

These ideas are also found in Buddhism, Christianity, and Judaism. The four religions are more similar than you may think. (I contend that original Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Judaism were identical.)

I couldn't agree more, but that can be a tough sell sometimes.
