I tell you. When you reach a certain age, seems like your only social activity is going to the doctor, visiting loved ones in the hospital or attending funerals. Worse yet, the funeral of someone who spent their entire lives smoking, drinking, overeating and otherwise abusing their bodies. Then having to listen to a preacher tell everyone how it was God's will that they passed at the tender age of 56.
Dang! Just realized I posted this in the wrong thread. It was meant for Your Daily Rant.I tell you. Tis why I try to always have some younger friends... the current group is all getting into their 30's...building families...establishing careers...buying homes... I told them I am going to be replacing them with a new herd of 20 somethings soon...When you reach a certain age, seems like your only social activity is going to the doctor, visiting loved ones in the hospital or attending funerals.

My pagan father-in-law's ceremony was really nice....yet the survivors take it on themselves that they need a preacher to 'say words' over them.
I wouldn't know what traditional would be in that regard. Sounds like it might have been in line with his wishes and that is wonderful. Thanks for sharing. My pagan father-in-law's ceremony was really nice.
His grave is on a 'secular site', a humanist cemetery. His casket was fast-degrading whicker which his children carried round the family garden three times, then into the back of a friend's van, and off to the cemetery. A gathering there in the hall, with one of his sons had volunteered to MC. Kids, grandkids and friends got up to say something about him, then off to the grave.
Bit of pagan stuff with bells, flowers in the grave, then back to the 'hall' for cake and ale.
Hugz.It's been better.
