Not much surprises me anymore especially when it comes to religious practice, but I was floored by something my sister-in-law in Fiji told me the other day. Apparently, the Methodist Church there is insisting that it is mandatory for Hindus who wish to convert to Christian to eat beef! She also said that when a Hindu marries a Muslim there they too are required to eat beef. I've never heard of such a thing. Has anyone heard of this practice? I can't seem to find a single Biblical reference to support this.
 
What an incredibly creepy practice. Kind of like a ritual killing to prove you are a member of the gang. Sheesh!
 
There does seem to be a sort of gang mentality at play here. The Fiji Methodist church has backed 3 of the 4 coups there. Essentially the ones that sought to limit the rights of the Hindu population. The last coup however, took place as the result of Fiji becoming close to being declared a Christian state. The then military leader, Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, took matters into his own hands to put a stop to it. This coup the Methodist Church was apposed to. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama has been in control since 2007 and is now the duly elected Prime Minister. He has fought hard to improve Fiji and promote racial and religious equality.

Hadn't heard that. Fiji Methodist Church is a bit strong armed when it comes to Christianity though. They've tried to have Fiji declared a Christian state several times. Then again, since Fiji Muslims do it too, maybe it's some kind of island thing.

Heard that happening some places in india. If you convert to Islam you have to eat beef to show your Islam-ness.

I do not know of Islam commanding one to eat certain food. There is no sin upon a person who decides not to eat a certain food, except they cannot claim God forbade something which He didn't such as beef. Forcing a newly converted Hindu to suddenly eat beef is rather insensitive to them for most of their life they probably believed cow as god.

The Hindus I've met are well aware of why the cow was made sacred....because without it there would be nothing to plow the fields and provide milk...especially when overpopulation and meat eating had almost wiped them out.

I am not sure where and how you heard this. It is not true. There is nothing in our doctrines, constitution or code of conduct that requires members to eat any specific food.

I have no idea where this rumour came from ,,,, you are the first person to have raised this.

Now that's interesting. Not the response, I would expect no less, but the Rev's name. Bhagwan is an alternative spelling of Bhagavan which means God in Hindi!

There is no compulsion in islam, and such nonsense is no part of it, but such is how many mislead others from the right way, whatever it is labeled as.

in The Quran, and in my understanding of the previous scriptures, God condemns compulsion, institution of religious laws besides God's, and unjust oppression, and advise us to treat one another well.

Sadly many mislead others from the straight path without knowing it themselves, though such has always been it seems the practise of corrupt religion, which the messengers and prophets and upright men sent by God always opposed and spoke out against
 
From what I've heard, most Muslims in Fiji do expect Hindus to convert and eat beef when they marry into a Muslim household. I'm not sure if that's just a local custom or part of a specific Muslim teaching though. I never looked into it.

As for the Methodist church there, while it's not part of the official church doctrine for Hindus converting to Christian to eat beef, there is a certain amount of pressure placed on them to do so.

A while back, one of my nephews converted to Christian from Hindu and now attends a local Methodist church in Fiji. He and nearly half the congregation are Indian and live in Hindu households where eating beef is strictly forbidden. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the church leaders organized a luncheon where beef was served. No one was forced to eat it mind you, but when several people refused, it was strongly implied that if they wanted to be Christian they had to give up all Hindu ways. That's what actually prompted me to start this thread over 6 months ago. It just struck me as being incredibly insensitive.
 
Lots of christian vegetarians in the world...

Sounds like they are trying to get folks to prove their loyalty....will you eat the sacred cow?
