Not a Muslim ban

My daughter-in-law's US Visa Waiver was denied due to her Aboriginal Passport. When we got her a regular Aussie pass they still denied the waiver and said we'd have to apply in person at the US Consulate. Come to find out, she'd been flagged, because someone suspected of having terrorist ties was able to enter Canada posing as a Syrian refugee and later attempted to enter the US using a stolen Aboriginal Passport. So I imagine Canadian border scrutiny is still tight as hell. The slightest hint of terrorist ties and you got some splaining to do Lucy!

Our border patrol is getting out of hand...insisting people unlock their phones and provide social media passwords...

They made a jpl (NASA n defense contactor) native born US citizen, unlock his phone secure and provided by NASA... A phone the border patrol doesn't have clearance for... Either risk losing your job working in the Webb space telescope.... Or you can't return from your conference...

yeah it's amazing how upside down this country is getting. Between the ban and the discussion of a registry still up in the air, it's beginning to feel less and less safe here. I have friends that say if there is a registry they will sign up, to which my only advice is DON'T. I appreciate the support, but if things get that bad, I don't want anyone extra affected. My Wife has suggested moving to New Zealand (Hey NJ), or just moving to Turkey. I think any move comes with its own problems, so for now, it's sit and wait.

and that action is of course illegal. between federal law and the 5th amendment, we should be protected from that kind of request if you are a citizen.

Thank you, Wil. No one, Muslim or non-Muslim--anyone who means well to the U.S. and its people, is against security measures. Mr. Trump got in trouble when for his ban he publicly boasted of a religious test, which is unconstitutional. And this is where the civil rights groups and his opposition saw an issue with his ban. However, I think with the "tweaked" version he is still going to implement the religious test, no matter what. We are in a strange times, for sure. The threat of terrorism is real, the extremism is a danger worldwide, but what I personally have an issue is that groups of people are treated as they are all the same, while some are not. Also, I think the religion of Islam is treated unfairly and it is becoming a norm. Sadly, true.

the problem exists in that folks think it is Muslim... Too many rabid Imams promoting violence get news coverage (like rabid presidential candidates). And not enough sane Muslims and Imams speaking out (where actually they simply don't get coverage, and we don't speak Arabic.)

True, Wil. It's always been like that in times of conflicts. Propaganda rules and it is not in the interest of a nation to promote moderate, peaceful voices from the opposition. I am sure that in Nazi Germany there were Germans who were against Hitler's genocidal ideas. However, they got zero publicity because the majority was collaborating with Hitler. Thankfully, today, the internet and independent media sites might give us more opportunity to engage in positive discussions and to hear from the other side. A lot of times it's a matter of going out or googling and connecting with people. I personally decided to run a blog on wordpress to help fight islamophobia.

I have problems with immigration bans on many levels. But with regards to a Muslim ban... all other arguments aside (even the moral arguments which are of greater importance) my biggest reason for opposing such is that it will not work! Any terrorist wanting to get in to the country (if they are not already in) will find a way. Further more, such bans feed greater distrust, fear, and anger between people as a whole... this is exactly what the terrorists want to happen. An immigration ban would help the terrorists more than it would hinder them.
