How does the fact that the Universe is constantly expanding suggest that time wasn't linear in the past?
Entropy.

Until you can reverse the second law of thermodynamics and cause entropy to reverse, it is impossible for time to go backwards. So therefore it is only going forward.

Time is tied to the universe. It theoretically doesn't exist without it. So unless you start seeing the universe reverse expansion and observe entropy in reverse, time travel will always be linear.

Interesting fact I recently learned: If you could create a time machine that could take you back in time from where you are sitting now, it would most likely kill you. Why? We are moving thousands of miles per second. So if you went back in time 5 seconds, you would find yourself in outer space and NOT on Earth. So unless your time machine was space-worthy, you're screwed.
