Its going on your permanent record.

I wonder what happens to the "permanent record" of people with some form of dementia (Alzheimers, Picks, Parkinsonian, etc.)

Ditto those with soe form of brain trauma...

That record likely lives on in the minds of others...

I have a son that really likes hearing stories of relatives that passed before he was born.

Grandma Paula, though dead several decades, lives on in the story of the day she threw her dress over her head...

She had a fear of mice. She was cleaning in her house dress, with nothing on underneath(as I hear was common in those days). She sat down to take a rest with a book. Feeling a tiny warm body crawl into her dress, she panicked. She grabbed the creature in the fabric of her dress, and ripped the whole thing off, throwing it across the room... Right as my (then child)uncle brought his friend in through the front door.

Her permanent record lives on(with love).

I went wjth a gal to the store, one who just pulled on her summerdress commando as it were. She jumped out her jeep, which had big trees and a lift kit to 4wheel over boulders.

As she grabbed the handhold over her head and slid out the door. The wind caught her dress flung it into the air and over the antenna...I had come around the side and helped her pull the dress down as three bikers on Harleys cheered. She like your gramma was a tad embarrassed and did not wanna leave the store when she saw the bikers still out there.

But theybwerent going anywhere....till.she did

It's a good question. I used to work exclusively with dementia patients. Many experts told me that they couldn't learn anything new and that many memories were likely lost forever. But my experiences say otherwise.

I often found that memory wasn't the big issue. Communication is the biggest issue. So let's say you visit an old friend who has dementia. When they see you they become upset and start yelling at you. They tell you to get out of the house. You are insulted. You were close friends. They obviously forgot about you. Actually I believe they do remember you. But they incorrectly tie you to someone else or to other memories. They also don't know how to convey their confusion to you. The communication center of their brain is also misfiring. So they may remember you and know that you are very important to them. But their intense feelings bring up other unrelated memories and confusion sets in.

It's a crazy mess. But once I was able to get to know my patients, I found I could easily redirect their aggression and confusion. For example, one lady would freak out and cuss people out who visited her. I would just walk up to her and start itching her back. Her back itched and she couldn't reach her back. She would calm down and thank me. She didn't know how to tell visitors that her back itched.

Interesting that music therapy in dementia cases would suggest the memories are still there ...
Memory itself and how it works is a fascinating thing.
