Bereishit (Genesis) 1
6. And God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water, and let it be a separation between water and water."
7. And God made the expanse and it separated between the water that was below the expanse and the water that was above the expanse, and it was so.
8. And God called the expanse Heaven, and it was evening, and it was morning, a second day.

hi everyone, i don't know if this has been asked before, if it has, sorry, just ignore me, if not, here we go. this has been on my mind lately and just wondered if anyone noticed, but God calls all the other days good, except the 2nd day for some reason. just want to know what everyone thinks. i have my own theory but is very christian and don't want this thread moved to the christian forum because i want to know what everyone thinks about this. thanks and God bless you all.

Leo,

Is your main concern that the Second Day is the only one not called Good?

This part of Genesis has been discussed elsewhere (although not the part about Good) on this Forum, so you may be interested in taking a look at those discussions.

i mean, yeah, why doesn't God call that day good? doesn't that make anyone curious as to why?

if you happen to find the links, by all means, let me know!

Could it be G-d wasn't happy with the transcription and the complete lack of understanding of the people of the day?

I mean passing on this misinformation that since the ocean is blue and made of water therefor since the sky is blue it is made of water as well...as evidenced by it occasionally leaking when those white and grey spongy things poke through it and sprinkle water on us.

Therefor the water above is the firmament and that is where heaven is...the commies and the sputnik cosmonaut got a charge out of that not seeing the pearly gates anywhere in site when the went above that there firmament, score one for their camp. Tis always lovely that athiests are such literalists even when it comes to scripture that the orthodox understand as allegory.

So the whole physical science was so screwed up in the recording of that day that G-d decided it alone wasn't good...but did look back at it all on the 6th day and claimed every day to be good...

Quite interesting you have a christian answer to promote when we are worthy as to the reason this is...whenever you decide it is viable to enlighten us with this reasoning please do tell whether you read this in a book, heard it from the pulpit or came up with this yourself.

hi wil, LOL! its not like that at all, man! ok you have forced me so here it goes.
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
i was just thinking that perhaps, that is where most of the evil spirits dwell, you know? gosh, now they are going to move this thread.

In carefully reading the text, I actually do see where God calls the second day good. Verses 6-10 seems to be all one topic, namely the separation of the waters, either from other waters or from dry land. It was at verse 10 that He calls all that good.

The third day "good" statement is found in verse 12.

Maybe it just in the structuring of the verses, but if you count all the "goods" you'll see that they add up to six. Then when God surveyed it all, He proclaimed it all "very good" in verse 31, completing creation.

Do either of you subscribe to the Gap Theory?

It all seems a stretch...I prefer the beauty of the mystery...

Yeah, I do. You know when you go to The Gap and try on two pairs of identically sized pants, but one just seems much tighter than the other. I have a theory they do that on purpose.

Leo,

I'll see if I can dig up some links, although I am sure they do not deal with the "good controversy".

I see no reason why Day 2 should be unique in its "non-goodness". In my opiniion, such an omitted word seems to be a mistake.

Maybe he said it wasn't good because he had created the atmosphere and oxygen - then he knew that there was no going back - he had set it all up for life and then eventually "Us" and he knew where that would lead ....and that wasn't good

I do not know actually.. God never outright said it so I wont say thats how it was... I figured its just one of those things I'll ask Him about when I get the chance. It has no bearing on the redemption of man so I think its just not important but as something to ponder.. sure I think about it.. :)

not a mystery?

:D:D (If I may briefly digress...)

Today's Hint from Heloise
At least where Levis are concerned, I've found a solution to that. Try on a pair that fits, then note where it's assembled (Honduras, Dominican Republic, etc), then, no matter where you buy Levis, make sure they come from the same place.
