What Are You Watching on Youtube?

40 years ago on December 8 at the age of 40, John Lennon was murdered on the streets of New York City.

I remember all the record stores had little boxes that one could drop as much or as little money as one could afford for John Lennon's widow/children.

I also remember that Lennon's assassin also stalked Stephan King with the same intention for the author (all for fame. *shakes head in disbelief*)

I first came to know the music of Charley Pride, who passed recently, during a government sponsored visit to Texas back in the sixties. An Afro-American country singer was a rarity but he helped show some of those ‘rednecks’ that someone who was ‘colored’ could still be a good old boy man.

This is in memory of Charley Pride and of some of my brothers in arms from that long ago time that never got to live out their lives.

For a change Rob took lead instead of Austin.

Amira Willighagen at the age of 10.
When was the last time you heard a 10 year old coloratura soprano of this caliber?

O Mio Babbino Caro is a popular 'show off' piece. Rarely is the entire aria done outside of the opera as it is here because it is that demanding and separates the real singers from the fakers.

I don't understand the German, but the rest of the video's universal:

Doc Morris is a Dutch mail order pharmacy

Weihnachten is Christmas Eve or Christmas in general

Weihnachtensfilm is a Christmas Eve film

Herzensangelegenheit refers to soft luxurious material like silk or cashmere, apparently an advertisement for some company

By 14, Amira Willighagen had come out of the shadow of Maria Callas and found her own lyric soprano voice.

In Germany, Christmas is celebrated after sunset on Christmas Eve, on the 24th. That's when the family gathers and presents are unwrapped.

"Herzensangelegenheit" is literally a "matter of the heart", a very deeply felt wish or concern. The word has evidently been hijacked by the advertisement industry, implying that our hearts must express themselves by making expensive material gifts... Ahem.

That does better explain why the word is used in this video.

I am not German but grew up in a mostly German speaking neighborhood of NYC. There were delis where you got better service if you ordered in correctly pronounced German, like the subtle distinction between the ä in jägerwurst and Fonzie’s ‘aay’.

This video might require a special "Warning" label because you might require at least one clean handkerchief:

The five-year-old boy lost his mother to cancer so he called 9-1-1/9-9-9 after the mother's death.

Merry Christmas!

I promise to find someone else to obsess with after this.

The very first Christmas my wife and I spent together, we lived in this crappy little apartment in the city and had very little money for food let alone gifts. About all we could afford was this film my wife found on VHS in the dollar bin at a local shop. 32 years later I still cherish it and her. Merry Christmas one and all...
