Since we have so many dog lovers here I thought I would ask if anyone has come across a face scratcher?

We got a rescue dog (collie cross) 2 yrs ago and she insists on pawing at your face. She often catches my eyes and mouth and it hurts like hell. She also snacks (bites) at my face when she gets too excited.

What is she trying to communicate to me and how do I stop it? When I say NO she hides her face in the blanket then comes and does the rubbing up I am sorry bit but 5 minutes later she does it again.

Any ideas?

One word... Patiences.....

This is something I'll post tomorrow sorry time to go home lol watch this space.

Psychoanalysis...I believe she believes she's a cat.

Or, maybe wear a rubber frankenstein mask whenever you play with her.

Just kidding, I really don't have an answer, but ask me anything about Indonesian Moustache Parakeets and I may be able to help you.

I know it sounds dippy but I have thought of finding a psycholanalyst for her. She just has something in her head and we can't work out what. We have had over 20 dogs in my lifetime but this one has us stumped.

How many feathers does an individual bird have?

I wasn't being facetious about seeing a doggie shrink. Maybe just some practical suggestions is all that the situation needs. I'd wait for our sage friend 17th's advice. I'll bet he knows what to do.

My little girl bird has a neurosis that she picked up in her misspent youth when she was living elsewhere under unknown circumstances so she picks her feathers. She's become very insecure now that she has someone who is with her at all times, and she yells at me whenever I leave. Kind of like having wife #3.

She has less than the normal count I'm sure. Thousands I would suppose though. I'm always finding little fluffy ones lying around everywhere.

Discipline. If your dog has a habit you want to control in some way, ie, not bite your face, then I would have thought a system of punishment and reward would be required.

That also means proper use of tone - low harsh tones for no.

2c.

Flow you said as you anything about your birds and the first question I ask you can't answer :p Hee, hee.

I may need help with the dog from a shrink, something is going on in her head and it is beyond my understanding.

Hi Brian, every technique we know is not working. My family home is a training camp for naughty horses and we have had so many dogs but every technique isn't working. The voice tone works for a full 5 minutes then back she goes. We have no history for her, she was rescued so it must be something in her head?

I think it's me that needs that Flow - will it help with my headache?

MW,

I was thinking about a couple of radio contributers (one has her own show on WPR here, the other is affiliated with one of the morning shows that I sometimes listen to [if I'm awake].) I'll e-mail you the contact information if you're interested, okay?

Sorry, but I'm an ailurophile. :o

Hi Phyllis

Thank you I would be very interested in their contact details. I follow your feline interests but when you live in my parents house you have to accept the whole minagerie.

4 weeks until I see my fluffy master again YAY (that is tha cat not the husband :p).

Socks on the front paws and a loose muzzle on the snout each time she does it, until she learns that nipping and scratching are not accepted. Also, take time to go to owner/pet obedience training. It works well.

I like the socks idea, if I can get them on without being bitten. I will give that a try tomorrow.

Not sure behaviour training would work in this case Q. My family train animals all day and we are at a loss with this one. My father has put in the most effort for 2 years now but something in her brain triggers this behaviour, we just can't work out what the trigger is.

No idea if this has been answered I cannot be bothered to read through all the posts lol... YES! I am lazy.....

Main issues, your dog is a working dog.... Meaning by nature it is intelligent and active it needs alot, alot of work... A tired dog is a happy dog... Teach it new tasks like arobics and so on... give it more to do, as you need to cut it's excitment.... Also I would suggest making yourself clearer in the heirarchy... You have to state you are higher... Actions are best.... Don't make a fuss, don't even talk to it... If it jumps up and paws at your face Silently stand up walk away, if the dog is putting weight on you, gently... GENTLY with no aggression or sign of any emotion push it away. Avoid eye contact also! :D When it greets you correctly... Reward it with attention and praise. Also is it the first pack memeber you shower attention on when you return to the den? lol... Or do you give attention to the human pack memebers first?

Anway busy day I'll add more later...

17th is right I reckon mw, Id just like to add anothere thing, with one of my pooches ( yes Mr Doodles) he is quirky. that is , we are pretty sure he is braindamaged (a little) he runs around in puddles(when it rains), runs flat out and then suddenly stops, flips himself on his side waits a few seconds andthen gets up again.Strange, even for a Stafford. If your adorable pooch is too much too handle I think 17ths advice is best. But, you may have a slightly damaged pup that wont change much. Did I mention that Tonka is part Kangaroo. He clears the four foot front fence in one jump and the Dog compound has a 7ft fence and he climbs over that. Hes the problem child. lol Good luck Mw.

Hi Grey...Yeah she's a sweetie. My camera takes pics way in excess of the CR attachment limit of 100kb so they won't attach. Otherwise I would. She's a cutie.

flow....:)

Hi 17th, I knew you'd be there with the answer. the only problem is, how do I hot link a jpeg on an Apple ? I'm writer and don't know much about the image capabilities of this thing.

BTW, are you really the "avatarminator"?
