Hi, I'm Louis...
I'm here to learn.
I have never practised any form of religion because I have
never UNDERSTOOD religeous belief or faith.
I'm hoping to find somebody who can provide a rational
explanation of WHY believers believe.
For example : if I say I "believe" a statement, I mean I
am SATISFIED that it's true -that's it's an accurate description of reality. I am satisfied by things like
objective evidence. How do religeous believers become
satisfied....?

Hi Louis, and welcome to CR. :)

As to your question - heh, I'm not sure if anyone knows what "objective" is. :0

In my opinion, people are satisfied by their personal experience, which obviously varies widely. :)

To I, Brian...
By "objective", all I mean is the world outside myself as opposed to "subjective" - the world inside myself -
my personal perceptions, feelings, subconscious desires .
I think of subjective things as nothing more than
inventions of my own mind - having no reality in the
outside "objective" world.
I can't comment on "personal experience" where religion
is concerned since I've always been a complete blank
in that area.

Louis

I'm pretty much a fan of the basic Cartesian principle as well - Cogito Ergo Sum: I think therefore I am - as the only experience we can ever be truly sure of. :)

From Louis...
When I say "objective", I mean a part of the real world
outside myself - not what THINK is there but what is
ACTUALLY there, whether I know about it or not.
As opposed to "subjective", which means part of my
own thoughts, feelings and PERCEPTIONS OF the
world outside.
But these "subjective" things can be misleading and
ON THEIR OWN, they are not reliable indicators of how
the world ACTUALLY IS ! They are not to be trusted
until they have OBJECTIVE confirmation !
And that situation is obvious to me, I can't understand how anyone can be satisfied by only their own "personal" experience.

Namaste louis,

thank you for the post.

the problem is that people only have their own "personal" experiences from which to derive the objective facts of the universe.... thus what seems to be red to one person is green to another.. yet.. the wavelength of the light wave is the same for both..

they subjectively see red or green yet, objectively, it's just a frequency vibration that they are interpeting differently.
