Two British archeologists declared Monday that they have uncovered the core reason behind the construction of one of the world's best known and least understood landmarks.

The stone circle at Stonehenge has stood for thousands of years -- and bred endless debate over whether it was a temple for ancient sun-worshippers, a sacred burial site, or even a kind of massive prehistoric astronomical calculator.

Professors Geoffrey Wainwright and Timothy Darvill argued their own explanation for the mysterious monument: Stonehenge, they said, was a kind of primeval Lourdes, drawing prehistoric pilgrims from around Europe.

I think the people who built it, built it as a tourist attraction.
:D

Just a thought.

HEAD LINES:
SCIENTSTS UNCOVER THE MYSTERY OF MONUMENT
(WASHINGTON MONUMENT ;) )

Scientists say
The elevator inside seems like a way that worshippers prayed closer to GOD, and its form might indicate that it was made to point to where GOD is in the universe...etc..etc..etc...

Amazing how a small circle of stones causes so much attention and "mystery"

Moved to the Ancient History section. :)

What's interesting is the way they are increasingly looking at a link between Stonehenge and the archer burial - think there are as many questions being uncovered. :)

Anyone read the Kurt Vonnegut novel in which all the major archaeological mysteries are hieroglyphs engineered by aliens to keep in touch with a spaceship crashed on Jupiter, or somewhere ... ?

Along the line of ... The Great Wall means:
"We got your message ... the part is on order and will be despatched as soon as possible"

The Pyramids mean:
"We are currently out of stock ... your part is on order ... we value your custom, and will treat your request with the highest priority ... "

Stonehenge means:
"Your order has been despatched. Thank you for shopping at InterGal MegaMart... "

(I've updated the PC-speak a tad... )
