Do we still need religion

Mark, your assuming that it's a fact that there is no God, and no afterlife, lol

I'm assuming no such thing. I'm talking about how to satisfy people's psychological needs. On this level, it doesn't matter if gods or afterlives exist or not.

eudaimonia,

Ummm... wouldn't, say most members of any religion disagree wit that thinking? Like, wit Christians, not believing in God is like buying a one way ticket to h-e-doublehockeysticks, lol. They think it matters. It just depends on your perspective. :)

Oh, you meant on a psychological level. So all religious people are crazy now, eh...

Lol, just messin about! :D

I agree, folks that follow blindly on family tradition leave me baffled, but that is what floats their boat...to them the purpose is keeping themselves in the will, or some social pleasantries that keep the dinner table happy.

If religion did not serve a purpose, people wouldn't show up and it would dry up on its own...

In Islam its a serious business basically for many you are not allowed to leave as most scholars agree the punishment for apostacy is death and even in the west where sharia law is not yet implemented the threat of being disowned by your family is huge and the potential shame that leaving would cause to a parent are huge and compelling, so many people really have no choice in the matter

organized religion can also provide community, fellowship and leadership.

Sorry, I know your being serious G2G, but ur new avatar makes me thirsty...

John 7:37-38 (New International Version)

37On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."
