Two things are out there which I'd like to hear perspectives on.

The killings in Texas. How do you see it, what do you think will be the reprecussions.

The story circulating of 450 men in Gaza marrying young (way preteen) girls and Hamas paying them each $500 to do so. Is it true?

Namaste Friend,

I agree.

One of the items I was speaking of is the shooters contention that Muslims shouldn't be sent to wars where Muslims would be killed. This after he's benefitted from years of salaries and education preparing him for this day.

As for the wedding I'm sure I'm not understanding the cultural significance and am looking for some insight.

Peace--

What to say? It was an act of violence and should be punished accordingly. What would be repercussions? Well, probably somewhere out there a Muslim man might get beaten up/killed because of such act and a Muslim woman may be attacked for her scarf. Retaliation.

If the guy was feeling horrible about possibility of him killing a fellow Muslim in Iraq, then he could have gone to his superiors in the U.S. army and request a quiet discharge. He could have explained his feelings, his fears and make peace with the fact that he perhaps should not be in the army. You do not go out and kill your comrades if you have fears of killing a person of your own faith.

But it sounds like he had some DVDs that preached violence. So....

Bottom line, any kind of terrorism is horrible.

The prophet Mohamed PBUH married Aisha when she was six years old so the marriage of preteen girls is perfectly acceptable in Islam.

Amazed at the crazy practices of ancient cultures are we?
How sophisticated and intelligent!

Just for fun though, here's some stuff I found in the news just this week.
Any modern & morally superior westerners wanna comment?

Congress takes aim at elder abuse
Scoop: Minister breaks the silence on elder abuse
Goar: The myths surrounding elder abuse - thestar.com
Elder abuse often goes unnoticed | Flint News - - MLive.com

For some more fun, lets start a poll and ask:
"How many sick and perverted Muslims here have condemned
their parents to a
"retirement home" ??

Hey, here's another idea for a poll: "how many modern & morally superior westerners here expect that anyone will give a damn about them when they grow too old too function as productive members of a mechanistic, fundamentally atheistic and materialistic society?"

...too wordy 4 a poll eh?

ah well...

Wait sorry.... You're justifying some islamic practice by showing other events from different religions? And attempting to move off onto a complete different topic? Uhm... Uber phailure..... True all these links you show are wrong... And so is a bunch of pedos claiming a f'ing CHILDS hand in marriage.... "How sophisticated and intelligent!"

I don't know if anyone will give a damn when I am old... But I fail to see what that has to do with "kiddy fiddlers for god" :/

(lol, tell me guys, how does it feel to miss the point completely?)

@ G2G

both the items in Wils post are fairly current and not ancient at all.
The practice of early betrothal for females is what is ancient. Something the West has relatively recently stopped practicing. Let me ask you something, have you ever studied sociology and anthropology? Do you know how recent the entire concept of the "adolescent" actually is? Do you know that it is an entirely artificial economic invention? Are you aware that historically, economic models are what govern the age of marriage, and not concepts of morality? That these moral judgments that people like you are so happy to apply to such practices are completely hypocritical?

@ Alex

You're justifying some islamic practice by showing other events from different religions?
A) Get your facts straight: I did not even cite religion, let alone blame it.

B) The only one who started directly defiling religion here was you.
(Indirectly; however, wil and g2g both enabled you, and you jumped
right on the bandwagon).

I don't know if anyone will give a damn when I am old... But I fail to see what that has to do with "kiddy fiddlers for god"
Well then you FAIL to see a lot then, don't you? For example, you FAIL to see how this practice is not "religious" at all, but cultural. Which raises the main question which you FAILED to ask yourself before pointing the finger at other cultures: it is clear that child marriages were present in all societies but "elder abuse"... well, your society seems to take the cake on this one, pretty much exclusively.

... how come buddy?

C0de,

I get why you're bothered by the OP but, well, flies. vinegar. honey. something something.

Hey i never made any moral Judgments on this one, and if I did quote me on it please.

it seems to be you going round making judgements with your anti western rhetoric and you live in the west dont you ?

anyway I expect a full apology please ;)

Well whatever, religion incite/blame, neither here nor there... You went from the topic of taken children as marriage partners to old folkes... And I still fail to see the connection.

What can I say! I love the bandwagon!

Religious practice... Cultural practice... Same difference.

It is clear that child marriages were present in all societies but "elder abuse"... Well your society seems to take the cake on this one, pretty much exclusively.... How come buddy?

Uhm.... Ok... Again what has that got to do with marrying kids? lol.... If I can/can't explain "elder abuse" will that then justify marrying kids?

.

@ G2G

Yea, that's it. I was the one who started issuing moral judgments here. And how crazy of me to suspect your pure intentions (as if your past record is so squeaky clean).

@ Alex

If I can/can't explain "elder abuse" will that then justify marrying kids?
Can you explain why you are applying artificial and economically generated moral standards (that were only adopted by your society recently) on the rest of the world? What gives you the RIGHT to judge these societies when your own culture/society is so clearly imperfect?

c0de,

Child sex abuse is endemic in every society. The reason we see mass reporting of child abuse in the west is because of a systematic policy of ending the silence that was the only thing keeping it hidden. As people were encouraged to speak out about their experience one thing became very clear. Controlling religious groups that had an officially strong stance on sex tended to encourage the worst of the worst of the sexual abuse. Our secular, fundamentally atheist, societies had no fear in exposing them. And it seems to me you are quite happy live in the US, why if it is so detestable?
There is no Islamic state even close to grappling the skeletons in their cupboards. The latest I heard from an Islamic state was the stoning to death of a 13 yr old girl who had been raped. The rapist got lashes. So for all your self assured ego you make as much sense as never.

Good I'm glad that you realize that now.

err... realize what? That I was responding to attacks on my religion?
Yea, I do realize that, thanx 4 opening my eyes G2G. :)
I am still waiting for my apology BTW ;)
have fun waiting.

Do you even understand what you are trying to refute?

What I am questioning are your definitions of "child abuse" and your right to point fingers at other cultures who don't follow those RECENTLY defined definitions, that are UNDERSTOOD to be a product of post-industrial economic models.

First of all, skeletons are kept in the closets (not cupboards).

Second of all, EVERY society is screwed up, I have never said
one is better then the other (I despise everyone EQUALLY).

But this thread isn't taking aim at every society is it? It is taking aim
at a RELIGION, and the cultural practices of non-western countries.
Scroll back and see which side fired the first shot.

And it seems to me you are quite happy live in the US, why if it is so detestable?
#1: I dont live in the US, I live in Canada.

#2: My family moved to Canada when I was 13, it wasn't my decision.

#3: I have decided to move and am currently getting ready to leave "the West" for good.

I totally agree with you C0de, its despicable that old folk are shunted off to care homes but its less an atheistic thing [after all Christianity's mores are still prevalent] and more the results of a capitalistic society, where both parents work to amass materiality at the expense of supporting family relationships. Its a f~~ up world and no society or culture is perfect, all can learn from the other.

Yep. It's the economic models that define the social conventions more than anything else these days. That's what I have been trying to tell these people.

Its a f~~ up world and no society or culture is perfect, all can learn from the other.
Exactly. Yet some just read the news and decide to start casting stones.
