On an unrelated yet aging spawned note, I sat down to dinner this evening and picked up a copy of the AARP newsletter to scan while eating. That's bad enough, but when I came to the Haband trouser advert, you know the sans-a-belt pants? For a moment I thought"hmmm, they aren't such bad pants".....

Sigh...

Hmmm... If only we could go back to the days when we were lucky to reach 30... Then we wouldn't have to worry about getting old, and there could be babies galore!

And plenty of wars... can't forget the wars...

If we had lots of wars though, we could all take the miracle pills to stay youthful until we died in battle, and there could still be plenty of babies! Nice. I've solved the problem!

After all, it's not really death people advocating this longer life stuff are against. It's aging. Shawn, I'm firmly convinced that the people backing this research are mostly just the run-of-the-mill sheeple you refered to earlier, fully immersed in our "never look older than 30" culture. Not very enlightened...

Baaaaa!

Meow...

I like ageing. I like my lines and wrinkles. Its a sign of character. I have laugh lines all over my face, cos I laugh alot! I was talking to my 81yr old mother the other day, and I asked her how she felt, (considering her age etc), and she said, "Oh, Im fine, Im at the age where I dont get any older, it just seems that that everyone is catching up to me!" (she has a 77yr old boyfriend, is travelling across the country next week to see some relatives, and has never considered herself old, just free to do and say what she wants!) (oh, and she likes the "younger" men). LOL. She contributes her youthful outlook to her habits of homecook meals, a few beers everynight and loud music!! LOL, thats my Ma and I love her. LOL

Bubonic plague and cholera are natural, too. Sewers and clean water are unnatural.

Well, clean water is natural. Until humans muck it up through population density. Then it is unnaturally unclean, and we have to make it unnaturally clean again.

There has to be a balance in there somewhere between living harmoniously with nature, limiting our own suffering, and retaining some natural flow and order to things. Where that balance is... who knows.

WOW thats the positive outlook!!!

It's a low bull---- tolerance outlook. It is an outright lie that "natural" == "good". There are a lot of natural things that are not necessarily good and a lot of good things that are not natural.

Aging is natural, so is death during childbirth. Does that mean we should not strive to reduce death during childbirth? Aggression is natural for primates. Does that mean we should cultivate and celebrate aggression?

"Natural" == "good" is a bad substitute for actually thinking about situations and trying to solve problems.

Just a little point here, not that it will probably make much difference.

We ALL age.
We ALL die.
(not necessarily in that order, unfortunately)

Not everyone dies during childbirth.
Not everyone is aggressive.

Just a small point.
Love the Grey

So we all age? So what? Now, please demonstrate how that proves that our aging MUST follow a specific pathway of degeneration typical of what one might find around the year 1600, to pick a pre-industrial period. Indeed, I see no compelling logic that we MUST age at all, only that we DO age.

We age due to flaws inherent in the design.
If the telemerase caps on the ends of our DNA strands would not become depleted, but would renew themselves (as opposed to acting like a slow fuse) then we would remain pliable and rubbery, as opposed to wrinkly and brittle, for as long as that process would function.
We are victims of flawed design.
But that can be changed.

Hydrogen is in 90% of all matter. Our human bodies store it in our tissues with liver being the most, then the intestines, kidney, heart, lung, and spleen having the least amount. As we get older, hydrogen depletes our bodies causing us to age

when i was a little girl, i always wanted to be an old lady, now i am half way there.....smile.

Video not available to people out of the UK.

shame, no worries though, was all about the shortened chromosomes issue you posted [and the unverifiable mice experiments on antioxidants]. This guy was pipped at the post on manufacturing the chemical but bought it anyway for himself and his 80 year old dad - $25,000 for a years supply [if l remember correctly!].

An interesting article which asks 2 pertinent questions:
1) Do people have an obligation to die and turn the world over to the next generation?

2) Many people fear that a longer life would result in boredom and a gradual loss of meaning.
Do you think this is so, or not, and why?
1) No one has an obligation to die, but lets see you try to avoid it . But yes, we have an obligation to turn the world over to the next generation, before we mess it all up.

2)That is a groundless fear. For an active mind and body life always presents great challenges and for some young people life displays a loss of meaning. It is not a matter of age, but perspective .
