'You will burn in hell!'

Irene,

I agree that there are mean-spirited people everywhere, it is not really based on their religion.

But you have missed the point. Do you think that, if a person has heard of Jesus and this person then decides not to 'follow Jesus', this person will go to hell?

Hi Irene — welcome to IO.
As a Christian, I feel disheartened at any Christian salivating over the idea of non-believers going to Hell.
So do I. Thank God we're not all like some who post here would have others believe.

I dare say they’re not true Christians.
It seems to me this kind of Christianity is most vociferous in the US. I could be wrong, but 'the religious right' seems to me to be more 'right' (politically) than 'religious'.

Our Lord cries when anyone falls out of His Hand. How can a Christian be pleased when our Lord is heartbroken?
There's a good question!

But please understand ... hateful people are everywhere ... it's just sadly religious circles are not an exception.
True, but we have a few here who are only interested in affirming their prejudices by showing others in the worst possible light ... you'll have your chance to develop tolerance here! ;)

I’ve met atheists who couldn’t be nicer, but there were some who were mean-spirited, too. I see that as the individual’s problem. It's not about his or her belief. It's about having good character or bad.
Irene, that sounds way too balanced a view!

What is a 'TRUE' Christian?

To me, a true Christian is one who believes in and accepts the teachings of Jesus and lives their life accordingly. This means being respectful and mindful of others and accepting that their believes may not agree with our own.

Although I don't share your faith, I respect your POV.:)

Er ... I'm not sure Jesus every taught anyone to respect any belief but His own.

I have been posting on another forum where some 'born again' Christian posters seem to be salivating at the idea of heathens like myself burning in hell forever and ever.

Yo quirkybird. I like the name. First off, fyi, every bible-believing Christian is a "born again" Christian. I think what you are describing is the arrogant, radical, know-it-all Evangelical Protestant Christians who boastfully act like they have all the answers and everyone else is inferior.

Listen, please. If ANYONE calls themselves a Christian and says "You are going to hell," then they are a complete fraud. Ok? Please don't let yourself think that those fakes represent real Christians. No man or woman on Earth, period, knows for sure who is or isn't going to heaven. And that's a fact.

Thank you for listening quirkybird!

Well what good is forced faith anyway? Forced conversions were trendy back in the day... about 750 years ago or so.

The Christian faith is still forced on people today, with the threat of 'you must be 'saved' or burn in hell' if they don't convert. I held out until I was eleven before doing the 'saved' bit. But even though I prayed and prayed for some experience to prove Jesus was around, I never had any feeling that he was. When the doubts became too overwhelming by the time I was nineteen, I lost my faith and never missed it.

Q,

I believe that, when we request to enter nirvana, we not even asked if we believe in Jesus, Buddha, etc., or not. We may or may not burn in hell, but it doesn't depend on if we invoke Jesus' name or not.

My only request is that I cease to be when I die!

"My only request is that I cease to be when I die!"

--> I know of several 'stories' of people who had died, and didn't even know they were dead!

Hmmmmmmmmm! When you die you don't come back to tell the tale, imo!

It is said there are those among the living who can (and do) visit with the dead, then come back and share their stories with us.

Thank you for your welcome and kind comments to my post, Thomas. :)
Christians have been persecuted right from the beginning, I'm willing to bear carrying the cross. But we must also avow that there have been times some people who claimed themselves as Christians were regretfully the oppressors. But I'm always hopeful that the open-minded, reasonable people outnumber the closed-minded ... and God will guide us all.

Nick, All the good people will inherit eternal life, doesn't matter what religion he or she belongs to. That's my belief. So it happens, I've posted the reason why I believe this way under the thread "What is your favorite Bible story and or quote and why?" (post No.3)
