What NON-POLITICAL, NON-RELIGIOUS Headlines Are You Following?

I just donated 2 ::kitty:: carriers and an old dog crate to someone headed down to help at one of the emergency shelters.
I realized this may sound like sharing for the sake of making myself look good. That wasn't the case, simply that there is a real need for such things. And to Phyllis' point, pet food is something I didn't even think about donating. Duh on my part.

More sh!t about Harvey: there have been hotels price-gouging people staying in them (rooms usually costing $155/night going for over $300/night,) plus other people who are taking advantage of the situation by burglarizing evacuated houses (sometimes getting the residents out of their homes before stealing any/all valuables.)

I wish that the burglars lose everything they own in something more personally catastrophic than a hurricane. Moreso if their fences lose their businesses and their dealers lose everything up to and/or including their lives.

The case was thrown out because the coverall 'psychoactive substances bill' has exemptions, such as caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, etc. It also exempts psychoactive drugs used in medicinal treatments.

Two cases went before the courts of people taking Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to a festival. The drug, the defence claimed, is covered by the medicinal exemptions clause.

What's so bloody silly is it's as clear as day that the festival goers were not using it medicinally, but recreationally. But somehow the law, and put forward in the bill, is unable to distinguish between the two.

The whole bill is a nonsense. What is psychoactive? The aroma of flowers has a psychoactive effect. A lawn after rain has a soothing effect on me. So is the rain psychoactive? Or wet earth? Technically ... yes, if it induces an alteration of your state prior to seeing/smelling/tasting, etc.

Lawyers of every stripe are claiming the bill is unworkable. It's a case of the government bowing media pressure when newspaper owners bang the drum for 'Middle England' (small 'c' conservatism)

Heck, marijuana has medical uses (it's sometimes prescribed to cancer patients as well as glaucoma patients iirc.) Once it's sold, you cannot differentiate between recreational use and medical use.

Just ask George Clinton (he's on "medical marijuana".)

That's My Notebook BEATCH!

Woman pulls out gun in Walmart during row over last notebook
A woman is facing criminal charges after pulling a gun on two other women in a row over a school notebook.

The argument, captured on video filmed by a bystander, broke out between two pairs of women over the last notebook at a 'Back to School' sale at the Walmart in Detroit, Michigan.

Man dies after rushing into Burning Man festival flames

A man rushed past layers of security officers into a massive fire at the Burning Man festival's signature ceremony, suffering burns that left him dead just hours later.

Authorities are investigating the death of Aaron Joel Mitchell, 41, who broke through a two-layer security perimeter during the Man Burn event in which a giant, wooden effigy is set ablaze.

Nevada's Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen estimated that there was a crowd of about 50,000 people who were present when the festival's crew of firefighters pulled Mitchell out of the blaze. He was airlifted to the UC Davis hospital burn center in California, where he died Sunday morning. The sheriff said doctors confirmed Mitchell wasn't under the influence of alcohol, but a toxicology report is pending.

"We don't know if it was intentional on his part or if it was just kind of induced by drugs. We're not sure of that yet," Allen said..... AP Associated Press

I saw this and thought about wil. Not that he was the man, but knowing he's been to that festival a number of times over the years.

Tis a shame. This has happened before at other burns...one in Utah a few years ago. Security has been stepped up, but when one is propelled by desire.to end ones life (or drugs) not much can be done to.stop it.

With the intense heat and size of.fire I have been content to know it was quick...but this poor fellow tripped...and they "saved" him and airlifted...but he didn't make it. Many of.my friends left yesterday (normal.day of.exodus) there posts are all.referring.to the first shower or bath... I'll hear stories of this impact on the festival and them when they return

Another reminder for us to.check on our friends and ask them to speak out if they feel overwhelmed....that they've got a friend.

The temple burn in Sunday they erected a fence... Temple burn is always somber and moving (the temple itself gets filled with memorials, alters, notes, writing on walls, pictures, thoughts...) Made all the more somber I am sure by a chain link reminder of the occurance.24 hours prior.

During the man burn (typically, but not last night) security perimeter would be let down after all structures have fell....so people could approach/dance/drum/meditate/sit around the burning remainder ... That didn't happen... So much of the ceremony has changed, and may change the flavor of these events for a while....(stateside at least).

My heart goes out to the man and his family
