CORONA VIRUS

Iwelcome any critique of this Government, especially its mis-management of the pandemic.
It's easy to criticise with hindsight .. they haven't done too bad, imo.
I'm not a Boris fan. But I do credit him with the ability to change his mind when facts require. A comment not directly related to this covid business.

Really? Are you sure about that?
That's what the evidence suggests? remember our lockdown was largely advisory, whereas else it was mandatory.

We've done a lot worse than much of the rest of Europe.

We were told from the beginning, that the lockdown was to "flatten the curve", so
as not to overwhelm the NHS. The UK public overall can "pat themselves on the back". They achieved the aim.
The fact remains the Govt was slower to react to the signs than France, Germany, etc. Then we pursued a 'herd immunity' programme until they were presented with figures to show that the NHS would be overwhelmed. Lockdown was advisory, so many industries kept going ... pubs were very late in shutting, the construction industry was still working well into lockdown, so the lockdown was never hard and fast, it was always slippery ...

A country with a large, vibrant, densely populated city like London was never going to get away with just a few deaths .. chinese tourists were still in large numbers right up to the point when Italy was overwhelmed. China acted too slow.
Agreed. And COVID was here before anyone realised what was going on.

...and now the whole world is playing "the mask game" like China and Japan.
I am staggered by the issue people have with masks.

They give a false sense of security, imo. We were informed at the outset that masks wouldn't make much difference, during the lockdown.
I know. Now the evidence says otherwise.

Wearing a mask is effective, and widescale use of masks has limited the spread of the disease. Had we instituted masks earlier and more forcefully, we might be opening up again sooner.

I think Boris changes his tune according to public sentiment. He'll say what people want to hear. Everyone who's ever worked with him says he's lazy and duplicitous.

So does the Guardian?
I've given up on mainstream media.

Did you read the part about the 'unecessary deaths' from cancer and heart disease and other distress, due to covid emergency?
In no small part due to the Govt running down the health service over the years. It's clear the intent is to privatise, they're just running into the ground until then to sway public opinion.

We were 40,000 nurses short before going into the Pandemic. That number will increase significantly now the UK had tightened immigration controls. The nurses who worked the front line have received a kick in the teeth. It's notable that both nurses who nursed Boris at St Thomas' would not be allowed into the country under the new rules.

The US and Brazil both have repulsive leaders, but judging deaths per million, the US and Brazil are not highest on the list. I know one is not supposed to say these things ...
Context. The US is a first world country, you'd expect third world to be at the top because of underlying conditions — poverty, healthcare infrastructure, education, etc. That a rich, affluent, first world country racks up high figures should be a national disgrace.

There are thousands of jobs being lost, people going out of business, and there are going to be thousands of 'unnecessary deaths' and great distress caused by pushing other medical conditions aside.
Our problem is that successive govts have run the country into the ground. Thatcher sold the family silver, as the saying goes. Now our wealth is from money laundering, financial speculation, etc. We are no longer a manufacturing nation, but people want a return to 'the great days of empire', when we are neither great, nor possessed of an empire ...

You and me both.

It may be because the male penis withers and falls off when a mask is worn. But that's just a wild guess of mine.

How so?
How come "the evidence" has changed so quickly?
1. during lockdown politicians wanted to make sure there was enough PPE for health professionals,
including care workers etc.
2. we no longer have a national lockdown, and even a marginal difference by wearing masks is now more significant

Compared to a lockdown or social distancing, masks do very little.

NB substitute "face covering" for mask.

Thatcherism encouraged selfishness [ by selling the family silver .. shares etc. ].
I think most people realise that UK is no longer "Great" .. clearly, it is not in the same position as US.
The reason why many people voted for brexit is due to unsustainable rate of immigration.
If Europe decides not to "play ball", we then rely on our "special relationship".
i.e. aligned with US

Hmm .. I see a historical pattern emerging :(

You and me both.

It applies to both sides of the argument.
Society is changing quickly. Some people are only thinking of one thing.
i.e. getting back to normal

I see 'normal' as being undesirable.
..but then most "normal" people think I'm not normal ;)

I don't mind wearing a mask; if it allows millions of people to get on with earning a living before thousands more jobs are lost, and for children to go back to school -- it's a small thing. imo

"Normal" is a very vague term.

How about "not endangering our fellow human beings"?

Masks help decrease the amount and range of the potentially virus-bearing fine droplets of my exhalations. So wearing a mask is a basic act of caring for the next person during an outbreak of an airborne disease like the one we are experiencing now.

I'm not normal by many standards. I choose to express my non-conformity in ways which will not endanger other people's lives.

I think it’s disgraceful that ‘conventional’ media outlets have become so partisan. Nowadays the function of news reporting has become just a vehicle for most news organisations to push their own partisan argument and propaganda.

Conventional newspapers should be a bulwark against the informal internet and social media 'influencer' so-called news outlets, which have no impartial journalist training or proper standards of presenting both sides of the story, etc.

162,830 deaths in the United States (the last time that I checked.)

And the whole situation was supposed to have disappeared with warm weather. :(

Nor do I mind wearing a mask .. for a time..
However, claiming a person who is NOT wearing a mask is "endagering other people's lives"
is going too far for me.. :)
Many people are exempt, for example .. they are NOT guilty of spreading the virus.
China holds most of the blame, for ignoring it in the first place!

It's about balance. Naturally I'm concerned about the economy and people's
livlihoods. I have many relatives who are affected.
I do NOT, however, think that returning to life as it was before lockdown
is desirable. We were heading for climate catastrophe
It is not unusual that mankind want "their cake and eat it".
eg. carbon trading and other such tricks
We only fool ourselves. Naturally, it is those that have, that have the most to lose.

That's scare-mongering and making mask-wearing more significant than it actually is.

Fair enough, but you do realise it could become the way of life for the foreseeable future, don't you?
It already is in some countries. Should we be joining them, or should we aim to eradicate the source in the long run?

Although I agree with most of the rest of what you say, in my view it is wrong to use this Corona business as a justification for any social engineering. There's already too much mission creep, imo.

I have a bit of a problem with dissing China for everything because, people being what they are, it gets taken out on innocent Chinese people in our streets and cities, boycotting Chinese restaurants and so on?

I think that's a false dichotomy, so I'll answer, "both and".

Seatbelts have become a way of life, and will remain until we get rid of cars...

That would be racism, which I'm firmly against!
Take HongKong [ which incidentally are the owners of most Chinese restaurants in the UK ] ..
..do you think that THEY are happy with the Chinese regime?
I think you'll find they prefer "white democracy" to the politics of mainland China.
