What music are you listening to?

Ladies' Night by Kool and the Gang just ended and Getaway by Earth, Wind and Fire just started. That's what I get for listening to the radio.

Hi people! Soon it'll be Christmas and I translate some Christmas songs for a Russian site. And I decided to ask you, the English-speakers, to explain me an interesting moment from a song.
The question is: Who is that sergeant-major and what is he doing in this song? :) Maybe it's a part from a proverb or so... I have even no idea why in a Christmas song they sing about a sergeant-major!
Thank you!
The closing of the year

If I cannot bring you comfort
Then at least I bring you hope
For nothing is more precious
Than the time we have and so

We all must learn from small misfortune
Count the blessings that are real
Let the bells ring out for Christmas
At the closing of the year
Let the bells ring out for Christmas
At the closing of the year.

(Children chorus)
Up on the knees of a sergeant-major
Ride through the woods with the wind in your hair
Silver bells on a stolen reindeer
As we race to the castle over there

If I cannot bring you comfort
Then at least I bring you hope.

Now all the winter bells are ringing
Hear them echo through the snow
And the children's voices singing
on the streets so far below

This is a time to be together
And the truth is somewhere here
Within our love of people
At the closing of the year.

We'll walk innocent
with all of the pain
and all of the patience
all of the way
With all of us right
and all of us sane

Love one another
We'll fly in the arms of time
Walk in the waves and never fall
Don't fall (at the closing of the year)
at the closing of the year

If I cannot bring you comfort
then at least I bring you hope

Then at least I bring you hope

If I cannot bring you comfort
then at least I bring you hope
If I cannot bring you comfort
then at least I bring you hope

A radio telethon to raise money to help families who have children in the local Children's Hospital over the holidays (food vouchers, gas cards, hotel vouchers, air fare, whatever's needed.)

There are excerpts from a CD that includes "highlights" of the 2010 going on in the background (right now, I believe it's the interview with REO Speedwagon, who are performing a benefit concert for the hospital tomorrow night.)

The sergeant-major might be pretending to be St. Nicklaus or not, depending on how old the song is. He has had enough of war and he has stolen a sleigh for the children's sake. It is a time of war and sadness, and he's trying to cheer up the children. They have been through a lot. He is giving them sleigh rides in keeping with the theme of the poem which is to learn from misfortune but celebrate everything else. It makes me wonder why the bells have to be silver. That might be important, too.

I'm not going to get anything done today, Procol Harum, King Crimson, Wishbone Ash, Deep Purple...every band leads to the next and a trip down memory lane...

Moody Blues, Eric Clapton, Marmalade, Shoking Blue, Strawberry Alarm Clock...

Don't forget Zep, the Hollies, Fleetwood Mac, Looking Glass, the Doors, Wings, Jim Croce, Buffalo Springfield...

Just Gerry Garcia? What about the rest of the Grateful Dead?

Some more that I think might bring back "fond" memories: Crosby, Stills and Nash (sometimes with Young); "classic" (pre-1980s) Chicago; early Styx; the Rolling Stones; Three Dog Night; Pink Floyd; the Eagles; Dylan...
