Smoking

Hi,

Dubious humour aside, if someone wants to ingest something that is statistically quite likely to be the cause of their death then fine go ahead EXCEPT that with tobacco unless it is banned in public places then non-smokers would have to avoid PUBLIC places if they wanted to avoid the foul-smelling (probably carcinogenic) outpourings. Public is meant to mean public so I think the onus is on the smoker to stay away from public places when they want to smoke. I don't see why I should stay away from PUBLIC places just because other people want to make the air noxious.

Seems fair to me, I just wanted to hear what an unabashed smoker had to say on that matter

Indeed, they have banned smoking in most places... However (I live in the sticks) My local pub and other places of public "gathering" seem to disregard this law. I think fine, In a restaurant where people are eating or whatever go ahead ban it if you must... But not pubs, what are you... stupid? This is a place you go to expect drinking and smoking, will they ban alchol next from bars because thats bad for you?

Dondi.... *sighs* Americans..... A *** is a smoke, a cigarette, a roll up, a straight, a cancer stick..... Strange how people pick up and instantly take offense or you know get that "feeling" when someone says ***.... It's an everyday used term here... Harmless.

Snoopy.... You don't see why you should have to stay away because people smoke? Who the hell says that? It's you who decides to go somewhere or not... "I don't see why I should have to stay away from (some place) because they don't like smoking....." Goes both ways. I just think our world is become a bunch of pansys..... Can't do this, don't do that! Oh that will hurt! oh that will kill you thats bad for... Oh shut up and let people make up they own freaking minds... heh. Go back ten years twenty years? (if you can) When you went to a pub back then how many issues about smoke in a public house were there?...

Hi,
Indeed, it is me that decides. There are places that I would like to go but I don't because I don't want to breathe in noxious air. Someone who smokes isn't putting their health at risk by going into a smoke-free environment.

Probably less but as a society we are more informed about the health dangers. In some ways we have progressed; drink/driving, smoking, diet, bare-knuckle fighting, bear baiting, dog fighting... Over time practices that were once considered acceptable become unacceptable (generally...)

It can be an unpredictable world... Who's to say that they are not putting their health at risk? May find out ten years down the line something else isn't acceptable... "You what!? Go to salad bars?! But don't you know there is blah blah blargh in lettuce and tamtoes?!?! It gives you cancer of the face!"

Bare-knuckle fighting... *sigh of content* Whats wrong with that ;/ heh.

I guess things that were acceptable have indeed become unacceptable to some. I think it's like fashion... (fur coats for example.) Things that were unacceptable, I am sure in time shall become acceptable... And again I guess alot of what is already seen as acceptable shall be deemed evil :O

Too a degree, I think it is good.... Obviously not to the death... Or "no holds barred" but yeah... Good discipline.

I understand about things like the bear/bull baiting and dog fighting... That you can clearly see why it should never be acceptable.... (I own staffords..... The orginal 'pit bull' I could never put them through such a hideous event.)

in my world, all the non smokers have to wear masks, to protect their itty bitty lungs from shrivelling up... "I dont want to be polluted by ur noxious smoke, cough, cough..." fine and dandy, but I don't want to suffer from ur car exhaust fumes and ur spent aircraft fuel smog either...

I'm also a fan of bare knuckle, but its no fun without elbows, biting and gouging...

I've always figured when I hit 75 or 80 I'll take up all the vices, full bore...

But seriously all the second hand smoke studies, showing dramatically increased carbon monoxide and a variety of chemicals from smoke in blood streams of those breathing the second hand smoke...the kicker is they were performed by tobacco companies attempting to prove themselves right for their court battles...and they conducted the studies outside...OUTSIDE!!

Bottom line, if you smell, SMELL smoke, you are smoking a cigarette, don't matter who's it is.

Of course I also feel if smokers liked it so much they wouldn't exhale...

yes former smoker...never much though...teens and early twenties...gave up the weak stuff for the hgh tar stuff...and then quit that too...after having offspring....

Since I fix and install heating and cooling equipment, I regularly have to check for carbon monoxide in the homes of my customers. I have found very unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide in the homes of smokers if there was someone smoking even one cigarette. I usually have to advise the customer not to smoke indoors at least a half hour before the test or I get a false reading.
I once nearly condemned a furnace due to several smokers upstairs having their second hand smoke drift down to the unit in the basement via the return air duct.
I don't have to guess at how unhealthy it is, I have the numbers to prove it.

Peace

Mark

I.... Like you.

Oh really?! I best quit smoking then! I wasn't aware of the numbers!!.... heh.

Seriously, I registered almost 20ppm once in a smokers house. You can look up what the effects of being in that kind of environment will do to you. Remember that Carbon monoxide tends to build up in the blood stream.
I use an SGA1 UEI Carbon Monixide detector capable of readings from 1ppm up to over 700ppm. On the newer models there is even a blow tube for customers to blow into to determing the CO readings in their blood. Smokers get blown away by just how much they have accumulated. Hey, I smoked for over 25years I understand addiction, but like I said, I got the numbers.

Peace

SG,

Nope, but I do measure the outside air in some places just to get a differential. Here in Colorado Springs it can be up to 3ppm if there is heavy traffic but thats about all.

shame they do
i don't smoke because i'm just not tough enough. but as for fresh air i personally find perfumes, hairsprays deodorants, aftershave etc even more offensive than ciggy smoke. i think you'll find that they are as harmful if not more so. i think the worst type of pollution is personal (smoking, perfumes), followed by domestic (air fresheners, polish etc) and then atmospheric (car fumes, etc). to me you cant complain about smoke whilst living in and forcing me to when your near me a cloud of toxic chemicals like washing powders, deodorants etc. when you give up all these and your nose wakes up you are shocked at how much the whole population reeks.... jase

Sorry, I know you're being serious, but in all seriousness.. People who smoke are well aware of the dangers. But we STILL choose to do so... :) Airports? Nice one seattle.
