    Thanks for explaining that Bruce.

    The Woman by the Well

That's what I like about the jesus of John, his grace and that intimate understanding of whoever he was speaking to. He spoke to the heart.

    The Woman by the Well

The sixth sense? Just kidding:D Was just thinking, sometimes stories mean different things to different people, songs touch people in different ways... If the husbands are literal, in what way is a metaphorical interpretation harmful if you find it beneficial? For example wine, bread, oil...

    The Woman by the Well

I love this and all the other personal encounters jesus has on the book of John: nicodemus, the adulterous woman, etc. I hear what you say wil, makes sense, I can appreciate the the added dimension to the text, thanks for that. Though if true it is a shame it is veiled for the uninitiated...

    The Woman by the Well

Hi Bruce, how do you come to that conclusion? I'm curious.

    the 6 Day War...

Don't think you are, you demonstrate to be flexible and openminded. I was the one that once was brainwashed... I'm saying that you are listening to the same weird ideas I did, just to watch out for as you say manmade doctrines.

    Was Abraham insane?

Paul, What I am trying to say, is that it can be difficult to tell between the voice of god and our ego. I follow my ego too often, unenlightened perhaps, but I can't help it. But it becomes very dangerous when I confuse my ego with the voice of god, because it adds an undeserved infallibility...

    Rabbit

My take is that the idol is the sparks of human creativity, triying to harness it for profit. The dead animals perhaps represent the victimis of explotation?

    Was Abraham insane?

That reminds that there is a very thin line between genuine faith and self deception. Think of those religious fanatics that refused medical treatment for their children believing that god would heal. Those children are now dead. Fair enough if abraham wasn't crazy. Still makes me fear how...

    the 6 Day War...

Hi Leo, You are being a victim of some weird evangelical doctrines, I once was brainwashed as well. It all stems from this desire to interpret the prophesy of the end times in a suitable way, perhaps to help god hurry things up. If israel settles into holy land we'll arrive at the end times...

cursed for seeing your dad naked?

They probably read/heard it somewhere, I've heard the same thing before. Pattimax is probably right, "uncovering" is just a very prudish way of saying something else, goes to show that the bible is not very child friendly! From Wiki Curse of Ham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The...

    Tribute to Mark/Prober

Chris, I had no idea he was your brother. People usually say nice things when someone passes away, but Prober came across as a balanced person, and he was a very constructive member of CR. Hope for strength to you and all your family in such a difficult time.

    Belief and Mental Health

Well explained Dauer. Is not about endorsing the delusion, the 'craziness' points and reprensents the cause of the problems. Working with the elements that makeup the patient's reality, using the same symbols and talking the same language, trying to understand from the patient's pov. So here...

    dialogue about dialogue

It was meant to be joke about GPs. Though you hit the nail on the head, all the focus is on treating the most serious conditions. (Sorry offtopic)

    Belief and Mental Health

Indeed. You also count with the support of other believers, and religion itself as a tool of self help and personal development. I think that the greatest dangers and the greatest blessings come from interacting with fellow believers, a double edged sword.

Sorry 17th, I think god is greater than the NHS doctors by a mile.

    Belief and Mental Health

I don't know about being happier, looking back at all the churches I've been to, I don't think so (but maybe I've been mostly to the wrong ones:)). For the sake of argument, take the last one I attended, if 85% said they were very satisfied with life then I'd say its a lie, either a...

How confident in your belief in God?

99% sure, simply because the universe and all of us exist. Especially if god turns out to be an inpersonal one. So no need to look for a proof of love or any other human type of attribute. 1% uncertainty because I'm finite, I could be wrong so easily.

Who are more likely to lie men or women?

I don't know who lies more, but apparently I read somewhere (or was it TV?) that women are better at concealing their cheating, and much better at telling if their man is cheating on them as well. Men can't win, he, he.
